Katniss In The Hunger Games
It could be an amazing world if everyone just did their job, gathered their own food, and fought for their own survival. Of course, that is an excellent thought. Yet, every dystopian book proves otherwise, and The Hunger Games is no exception. Suzanne Collins, author of the series, tells a story about a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a resourceful girl who really wants nothing more but to go about her day as averagely as possible. Unfortunately, the world does not seem to want to work with her. Every year one boy and one girl from every one of the twelve districts is chosen to play in a brutal survival of the fittest game. It is called the
Hunger Games. Only one of the chosen twenty-four tributes will survive, and

Physical strengths are not always such an amazing part of one’s skill set, except maybe in the Hunger Games. Katniss is outstanding with a bow. Peeta at one point mentions, “the arrows never pierce the body. She hits everyone in the eye” (Chapter 7). This means that only is
Katniss able to use her weapon of choice, she is also every proficient at the skill. Katniss mentions herself that even though she is nowhere near as good as her father’s that is a, “better aim than Gale” (Chapter 7). Her skills help her not only as a survival method, but also as a method to make her more noticeable when the games actually

Unfortunately, with her being the second the last person to be judged the game-makers do not really want to pay attention to her. Instead, they eat food and act as if she is not there. Without a second thought, she places the arrow on the bowstring and releases the arrow, “The arrow skewers the apple in the pig’s mouth and pins it to the wall behind it” (Chapter 7). She uses her outstanding aimed skill to gather the attention of the people. Out of possible twelve points the game-makers could have given her, they give her an eleven. This enables her during the games to get more resources that help her, and Peeta, survive during the games. When she first gets her weapons during the games Katniss gains a sense of determination saying if an opponent burst through the trees, “I wouldn’t flee, I’d shoot I find I’m anticipating the moment with pleasure” (Chapter 15). She knows with her weapon of choice that she is unstoppable, and can survive anything. Sometimes though, physical strength is just the leading cause of what is an actual skill. Nothing is more powerful than Katniss’s determination. Her determination to survive, her determination to do what is right, her determination to protect her sister. That is the leading cause to all of this. Katniss’s determination to protect her sister is the whole reason that any of this series was made possible. By the most famous words Katniss

‘’War, terrible war. Widows, orphans, a motherless child. This was the uprising that rocked our land. Thirteen districts rebelled against the country that fed them, loved them, protected them. Brother turned on brother until nothing remained. And then came the peace, hard fought, sorely won. A people rose up from the ashes and a new era was born. But freedom has a cost. When the traitors were defeated, we swore as a nation we would never know this treason again. And so it was decreed, that each year, the various districts of Panem would offer up in tribute, one young man and woman, to fight to the death in a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice. The lone victor, bathed in riches, would serve as a reminder of our generosity and our forgiveness. This is how we remember our past. This is how we safeguard our future.’’…
