“‘I volunteer!’ I gasp, ‘I volunteer as tribute!’”(00). This quote shows how much she truly cares about her sister and how much she wants to protect her. She is willing to sacrifice her own safety, and take on even more of life’s more difficult obstacles to make sure her sister is truly safe. Katniss knows that she needs to win the Hunger games for her family, and surviving the games is just an obstacle in her path to see her family again. In the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character Katniss Everdeen survives the life obstacles of providing for her family and surviving the Hunger Games with the help of Peeta Mellark in the Capitol.

Surviving the Hunger Games was difficult enough, but playing the game at a such challenging arena made that task that much harder. Being at that the Capitol, also meant that she alone could not provide for her family anymore. She would have to count on friends in District 12 to help her family out. “Gale will get her the herbs she doesn’t grow herself,...He’ll also bring them game-he and I made a pact about this a year or so ago…”(35). Being the head of the household, and then being ripped away for the family had a devastating effect on Katniss’s family. Being at the capital also meant that that she was always under surveillance, and everything she did was being watched. Every part was her life was under the control of the capitol, and there wasn’t a way that Katniss could fight back. Being a Hunger Games tribute at the Capitol, meant that she had the do countless interviews and win over as many fans that she could. Pretending to be somebody that she isn’t is one obstacle that she will have a hard time

    Katniss Everdeen demonstrates great courage even in the most difficult situations. After her father died in a mine explosion, she keeps her family together and alive by “Making sure there was always enough food on the table” (Collins 10). This provides great courage because even though her family is going through a rough period, she still has to figure out a way to put the food on the table. It is not that many years past Katniss father’s death that she went into the Hunger Games. She has to use all her past skills from the wood to stay alive, and they helped her win “The annual Hunger Games, designed to discourage the districts from staging another rebellion against the Capitol” (Collins 26). She volunteers after her younger sisters name was drawn to be a tribute, because she knows she has much more of a chance winning than her sister, Prim. During the Hunger Games, the two last survivors are Katniss and her so called ‘lover’ Peeta. Neither of them wanted to win enough to kill each other, as they could not think of life without one another. Therefore they decided they would die together and eat the poisonous berries, otherwise known as ‘night lock’ and rebel against the Capitol making them have no winner. “I lift my hand to my mouth taking one last look at the world” (Collins 345). The head Game Maker came on the announcements and pleads to not eat the berries and two people from the same District could win.     Firstly, I have to mention Katniss Everdeen, the main character. She was a young woman, with a really hard life. She lived in district 12, the coal miners’ district. Her father used to work in a coal mine but he died in a work accident, so after that Katniss had to take care of her sister because her mother was paralyzed. Every day, she and her friend Gale went to the woods for hunting, and after that they sold what they hunted in the market. She was a great hunter; she could use the bow and arrows like nobody else. Probably, all these situations that she had to go through made her a strong woman, ready to participate in the Hunger Games with success, and also made her a great leader. She could be tough as iron when it comes to hunt, or fight, but she also could be sweet when it comes to convince the audience to like her or to convince the capitol she was madly in love with Peeta (the other tribute from district 12), or when she was with her little sister. These attributes, helped her to suit to every situation or problem she had, and she went through that successfully mainly because she could adapt her style to different circumstances, like an opportunistic leader. Moreover, she was a very determined and smart girl, like a leader has to be if they want to accomplish every goal they set.
