Homolka stole animal tranquilizers from her work and after their family Christmas dinner, Bernardo and Homolka served Tammy the drugs through beverages. She began to choke on her vomit while being raped by both of them and died. This was one of their first videotaped acts, and they were both let off free after Tammy’s death was ruled an accident.…

People perceive that crime, primarily violent crimes, such as murder, is the most serious crime society faces in modern times. This has led to efforts by many research groups to attempt to find the cause of such criminal behavior. The focus of such research is biological issues with the belief that a biological basis in criminals does exist and that understanding biology is useful when attempting to predict the individuals who may be predisposed to criminal activity in the future. Research in the 1960s suggested that males with an extra Y chromosome were predisposed to more violent criminal behavior, although further research showed no data to support this theory. Recent research that has received widespread publicity that suggests a genetic and biochemical approach. The argument is that neither approach currently provides enough convincing evidence that criminal behavior is understandable in terms of biochemistry and genetics.…

    The Scarborough Rapist

In May of 1987, a young woman was raped in Scarborough, Ontario. This was the first in a series of rapes which the media would begin referring to as “The Scarborough Rapist” (Sellers). The rapist was, in fact, Paul Bernardo, then 23 years old. He would eventually admit to fourteen rapes; he was associated in as many as 50 (Sellers). Five months later Bernardo met Karla Homolka, then 17, in a hotel restaurant in Scarborough. Prior to meeting Bernardo, Homolka had shown no signs of criminal or irregular behavior (Sellers). She quickly fell in love with Bernardo and the two became a couple. There is no suggestion that Homolka was aware of Bernardo’s was the Scarborough Rapist. The two did, however, participated in aggressive sexual play, with Bernardo showing great interest in having sex with a virgin something Karla Homolka could not provide. Karla’s younger sister Tammy, then 15, became a target of Paul’s attentions and Karla, demonstrating her willingness to “do anything” for Paul, participated in planning a strategy in which the two would drug Tammy and, while she was asleep, rape her (Sellers). The couple first tried to implement the plan in July 1990, giving Tammy a spaghetti dinner laced with Valium but Tammy woke up shortly after the rape began and the couple had to abandon their plan (Sellers). On December 23 of that same year, Bernardo and Homolka drugged Tammy Homolka using the animal tranquilizer halothane which Karla had stolen from her job (Sellers). With Karla videotaping, Paul raped Tammy in the family room of the Homolka house; however during the rape Tammy choked on her own vomit and died. Karla and Paul successfully covered up the evidence and Tammy’s death was ruled accidental (Sellers). Homolka and Bernardo would then go on to trick rape and release a young fifteen year old girl, in June of 1991 Bernardo kidnapped 14 year old Leslie Mahaffey (Sellers). With Homolka, he raped and murdered her, disposing of the body in concrete. Next in…

Serial killers are a relatively rare, yet commonly publicized, part of our society. The media portrayal of serial killers skews the opinions and creates a stereotype of murderers for the public. James Knoll, MD states in his article, “Serial Murder: A Forensic Psychiatric Perspective”, that no evidence supports the idea that serial murder is a “growing epidemic” as people believe it is (qtd. in Johnson-Sheehan & Paine, “Writing Today”, pg 332). This misperception of serial killing was exhibited in the way the media portrayed the “Hillside Strangler”, a murderer who was killing women in the Los Angeles area by strangling them and leaving them nude in the hilly areas in 1977. The articles reporting the murders helped to cause fear in citizens by reporting extreme measures being taken by others, using strong language, and stressing the idea of a victim profile, all of which help the media excite or incite fear in the readers, rather than reporting the straight facts.…

Canadian Criminals are a major part of Canadian society. In our country if you were not the direct victim of a crime you tend to forget the members of society that take pleasure in causing societies grief. As in the case of James Hutchinson and Richard Ambrose, whose crimes were committed in December of 1974.1 They were convicted of killing two Moncton City Police officers. Today, years after the murders were committed Ambrose and Hutchinson are still the center of a major controversy that has plagued our parole system. In order to fully understand the controversy that Ambrose and Hutchinson posses you must look at the chronological order of events that lead up to the slaying.…
