Kamehameha Leadership Style
King Kamehameha made a bold move in ruling all the Hawaiian Islands even though he wasn’t next to rule any of the islands. He slowly started to take over the islands one by one. Kekuhaupi’o was Kamehameha’s trainer, he taught Kamehameha how to spear fight, dodging, wrestling, and basic tactics of warfare. Before Kalaniopuu died he made Kamehameha in charge of their war god, Kuka’ilimoku. Kamehameha really strived to become a marvelous and effective leader, he went through a lot to become the ruler of all Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he cared for his people, family, and the islands of Hawaii and intelligent leader.
One reason why Kamehameha was an effective leader was that he cared for his people, family, and the Hawaiian Islands. An example that demonstrated he cared for everyone and everything was that he worked hard and was very active in participating in public work even though that was the maka'ainana job (23). An example that showed he was an intelligent leader was that when he started to trade sandalwood “he placed a kapu on young trees in order to conserve this natural resource” (26). He did this so that they could get more out of that tree when it becomes older rather than when the tree is young, the tree can’t give as much. This kapu was resourceful so that they can get more out of a tree by conserving it until it is older so that if they cut it while it’s young, there would only be a little bit of the tree and they would waste part of a tree since they could’ve just saved it and got more to trade. This was good since Kamehameha started to trade, he was becoming resourceful and better at trading while in the process of placing this kapu.
