Kamehameha was an effective leader because he cared about his people. Kamehameha made a kapu called mamalahoe or the splintered paddle; punishing robbery and murder with death. He created this to protect him and his peaceful people. This is an example that changed after the unification. This was good because it prevented death and murder; this kapu also protected the king’s rule.
A second reason Kamehameha was an effective leader was because he was open minded and was able to adapt to new ideas. Kamehameha learned from traveling that other nations charged visiting ships for harbor, pilot, and port fees. He decided to do the same at the harbor in Honolulu. The Hawaiians always worked with the sandalwood; they cut it, and carried it for many miles. This labor weakened the workers and left them barely any time, to cultivate their fields. Kamehameha ordered the chiefs and commoners to not spend all their time cutting sandalwood. He placed a kapu on the young sandalwood trees, so the sandalwood wouldn’t run out.
