Chapter I
Introduction:
The number of pests in our homes and environment are increasing. Nowadays, people preferred buying chemical products to kill the harmful pest on our surroundings. These chemical products pollute our environment and it is really dangerous to our health. Because of these problems, researchers had found and discovered new and organic alternative pesticides.
The researchers want to find much cheaper and environmentally friendly pesticide. But here the pesticide will not be tested on the adult insect, but it will be tested on the larva of the insect. Soybean, a species of legume native to East Asia, will be compared to the controlled larvicide. Soybean has an inhibitor that slows down the growth of an animal that makes it a possible larvicide. Here you will see the effect of the soybean extract on the larva of a certain insect.

Background of the study:
The dengue fever virus is a danger to the health of the Filipinos. Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) is a vector for transmitting not only dengue, but also Chikungunya, yellow fever viruses, and other diseases.
Studies have conducted throughout the world to find a solution to lessen the growth of this kind of mosquito. People have used mosquito nets to prevent their children from the bites of mosquitoes. People also used mosquito repellents to prevent the growth of the mosquito.
People have focused on using larvicides for mosquito control. Based on studies, the active ingredient in these larvicides, methoprene, stuns the growth of the other organisms that has been affected by it.
The people have been wondering, “What can be an effective and natural insecticide?”
Soybean (Glycine max) is a common plant in the Philippines. Studies shows that it contains a certain substance known as trypsin inhibitor that slows down the growth of an animal. Along with the other ingredients, is the powdered soybean feasible to be used as mosquito larvicide?

After doing extensive research and a risk assessment of Malathion, I believe that the benefits outweigh the risk in using this pesticide. First, I will give a little background on the mosquito. Mosquitoes are two-winged flying insects that need blood to fertilize their eggs. There are over 3000 different species of mosquitoes in the world. In the United States, there are 150 different species of mosquitoes (Crans, 2004). Female and male mosquitoes have an average lifespan of two weeks and feed on plants. It is the female mosquito that bites and feeds off humans, birds, and other animals blood to help fertilize their eggs. Because of this, female mosquitoes can spread diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile virus (CDC, 2010). According to the American Mosquito Control Association (2010) there are “at least 43 species of mosquitoes have been found infected with the West Nile virus in the United States.”…

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

The sweet juicy flesh contains sucrose, fructose, and glucose. The fruit peel of Lansiumdomesticum, var. pubescenes (thicker than one of the sweeter var. domesticum) exudes a white sap/latex containing mosquito repelling triterpenes (lansionic acid p.e.). The dried peel is burned and produces an aromatic, white smoke (white from the sap and some remaining water). According to what we have researched the peelings of lanzones have this aromatic smell that drives away and kills, mosquito, the smoke of this repellant for the smoke is a good agent in making mosquito repellant. This may be a cheap alternative to de-fogging and fumigation against dengue-carrying, diurnal mosquitoes and malaria-carrying, nocturnal anopheles. Another alternative would be ipilipil.…
