Judith Slaying Holofernes
Despite a heavy importance being placed on the overall mood and display of a painting, many of the most important factors are tied to minute details. On Gentileschi’s most recent rendition of Judith Slaying Holofernes, Judith is shown having an added accessory – a bracelet. Encrusted in the bracelet are carved images, most notably is a figure seemingly holding a long bow and arrow. Few who have analyzed this detail attribute the figure as Artemis due to her association with archery as well as protecting young maidens and virtue. The bracelet figure right below also portrays a female figure seemingly admiring herself, a possible nod to Aphrodite. If such a hypothesis is true, then Artemisia’s decision to incorporate Greek mythology figures within

    Rona Goffen’s “Icon and Vision: Giovanni Bellini’s Half-Length Madonnas” shows how Bellini, and most noticeably his Madonnas, represent the ways that Eastern, Byzantine and Greek, styles effected the western Italian style. Goffen explains the long history of connection with Byzantium which made eastern art not unusual, but a popular style. Bellini used the popular motifs of this style to incorporate into his work; such motifs included Greek letters, a solemn Mary, and his use of half-length which all directly quoted Byzantine and Greek models. These details revealed the Madonnas to be icon paintings and for use in religious worship, not just for aesthetic pleasure, particularly his use of the half-length. This half-length style has a long and ancient history of referencing icons and other figures that were meant to be eternal, just as an icon is the vehicle for an eternal religious presence. This half-length style was not as popular as the full length and enthroned Mary in Venice, a style that Bellini also used and Lymberopoulou points to as an influence on Cretan art.     Walking through LACMA there was a section that caught my eye and found it to be of interest to me. That section was the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan Art which was located on the Ahmanson Building, Level 3. There were various unique pieces such as vases, jewelry and sculptures. I chose the sculpture of Hope Athena to do my visual analysis because I found it to be beautiful. Athena was a Greek goddess of wisdom and war. The sculpture at LACMA is a Roman, 2nd century copy after a Greek original of the late 5th century BC School of Pheidias. The sculpture was made out of marble with neutral colors. In parts the color was dull with hues of ivory and golden brown. The shape of the body was rectangular with broad shoulders. The sculpture had her arms missing. Her head was round with hair coming down in vertical waves. She was wearing a warrior helmet from my view point I could not tell what the helmet had on it. The helmet gave her a powerful look. Her facial expression seemed reflective with facial features being symmetrical and smooth. The eye sockets were hollow and dark. Her nose was chipped and her upper and lower lips were thin. One of the focal points for me was how her robe or drapery had such detail throughout the sculpture. It wrapped around her body with great detail with vertical creases and folds giving the sculpture a realistic look.     One of the first pieces we observed was the black figure, red storage jar dated 515-500 BC from Athens. The shape was an amphora with a lid, and the size was comparable to a large vase. The subject matter on the front side depicted a fight scene between Herakles and Kyknos, with Herakles bearing over Kyknos and Ares, the God of War, standing on the outside ready to defend his son. What appears to be a woman (Athena?), as she is the only white-skinned figure in the scene, stands on the other side of the battle, directly behind Herakles and looking as though she is either solemnly watching as he bears over Kyknos, or as though she could possibly be guiding him or holding him back, concerning her very close proximity to Herakles. The figures are very detailed—very defined lines for the muscular figures of Herakles, Kyknos, and Ares, and the armor (such as Herakle’s lion skin) and weaponry are precise in design. For instance, Ares is holding what looks like a hoplite shield, and it contains patterns of white perhaps made with an incision tool. The patterns surrounding the scene look almost oriental in style—flower like patterns align the neck of the amphora, and leaf-like designs wrap around the bottom.…

    Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity.
