He stood at about 5’3,” which made me laugh a bit because I was taller and I would be calling him my mentor. The style he had was that of a preppy college student. Francisco always figures out a way to keep his big bright smile on his face, despite the situation he is facing. ESL 185 Writing Assignment Maria Zuniga Book Report December 9, 2005 Corrections “Sor Juana” is a biography of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz written by Octavio Paz and translated by Margaret Sayers Peden. It is a book of 470 pages divided in six parts that besides Sor Juana’s life and work, explain the difficulties of the time for an intellectual woman. It was published by The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1988. Reading this book gave me the best opportunity to know more about someone that although has been very influential in my entire life, I didn’t know all her history. My admiration and respect for Sor Juana started since I was a child and one of my sisters used to read her poems. Through my literature classes I knew a little more about her and the…

It was a cool, pleasant Sunday evening at the China Garden Restaurant, where customers enjoyed some of, reportedly, the best indo-chinese cuisine in Austin Texas. However, this calm atmosphere would soon be abruptly shattered by a lone gunmans bullets. Jesus Manuel Garcia, an employee of the China Garden Restaurant, had become distraught after his girlfriend broke up with him, lashing out saying he would “shoot somebody,” however, by the time his ex could alert someone, it was too late. Garcia began firing on the Restaurant with his glock 23, eventually chasing patrons into a nearby theater. Fortunately for bystanders, off duty Sgt. Lisa Castellano chased the Garcia into the bathroom whilst shooting him several times. Garcia was eventually…

As soon as the summer of 2015 ended, I was living in Colombia. I was used to spending summer with my family and friends in Colombia or traveling to the US to play golf tournaments or golf camps. But that summer was different. My parents told me I was spending the summer at USF in Tampa at “SuperCamp”. I read all about it on the internet and all it said was that it was a fun academic camp. I was not happy at all, but the decision was already made.…

    A Cuban Story

All I have ever heard about Cuba are stories. Since I was little my grandparents would tell me stories about their native land Cuba, but these were not nice stories. Some of these stories I could not even believe them. They seem like things that could only happen in movies. Things like spies, people trying to escape the island, government oppression, poverty and people disappearing without a trace. I used to think these things only happened during the time my grandparents lived there, but I was wrong.…

Another story that I am going to discuss is Tres Hermanos which is about three brothers who go on a journey for their parents. The first two brothers get caught by a fascinating town, get some money from the man and completely forget about their parents. In this story, those two brothers’ characters are pretty much the same. The first one “lied to her and told her he had no water,” (1611) and he replied to the man “I’ll take the money” (1612). Similarly, the second one also “didn’t share his water or food with her,” (1612) and he chose “The bagful of money” (1612). From those two brothers’ behavior, we can easily see that they have no loyalty to their parents and God as well as they are too greedy to keep their promises. However, the youngest…

A sour smell drifted through the streets. Not very pleasant to one's sense of smell. Skyscrapers stood tall as if they've been there for millennials. I've been in New York City for two years now living in the projects with my brother and his gang. We came here from Puerto Rico to start a new life and for new opportunities. It's been nothing but trouble. Tigers against eagles, whites against Puerto Ricans. My brother is the leader of the gang. Trying to make a name for himself, claiming territory like he runs the place. The cops are corrupt and unfair. Gang members are beaten senseless without reason and the innocent are thrown in jail for false accusations.…

    Short Story Pedro

Gutter whispers flew vehemently into everybody's ears along the interwoven lines of makeshift-houses made of scavenged house materials. Pedro is one of them --- the squatters. The stress and poverty in the city made him frailer, saggier than an old man and balded his crown even though he is in his mid-life. These are the consequences he didn't expect and they didn't expect. He's one of the people who tested their luck in the city. The desperation for a middle-class life was the drive that turned them into a moth allured by the superficial job opportunities and burned their wings with illegal drugs or their own illetiracy. And now they fell into the slum hell, where gossip is poetry and cops are…
