The land of Macondo?before civilization?was lush with vegetation, a ?great swamp that spread out toward the other side of the world?there they founded the village? (Marquez 24). Was Hernando Cortez a good or evil man? This debate has been argued over the years and still is today. Those who say Cortez is an evil man seem to focus singularly on the actions that the great Spanish conquistador has inflicted upon the Aztecs and the surrounding Indians. Not once do they look at the reasons why he performed the actions that many say were horrible acts of violence and manslaughter. These accusations of greed and murder of the Aztecs, as well as his own against Cortez have been corrupted in order to give a false and savage image of this great Spanish man. Hernando Cortez was, in fact, a great man contrary to what most is taught to believe.…

In the lyrical poem, You Men by Sor Juana de la Cruz, she attempts to unveil the patriarchal society in the 1600’s that women were confined due to societal beliefs and values. During the 1600’s Latin women were valued for childbearing and traditional roles in the home. Therefore, Cruz had difficulty in her personal life with the roles assigned to women and joined the convent. At the convent, Cruz wrote as a woman of the upper class and used the protection of the court to her advantage. Spanish conquistadors. In their search for gold, they instead found a mountain of silver and they hired indigenous slaves to mine it all out and hand it over to the Spanish. Spain became incredibly rich but made their taxes poorly and experienced inflations that caused them to lose a majority of their wealth. China experienced a similar thing when they received silver, and then created a new tax form for silver rather than goods. Silk makers were heavily needed because the Chinese needed something that they could trade with Japan to get silver to pay for their new taxes. With the overwhelming amount of silver, this created another inflation and that caused the downfall of their economy.…

Victoria Martinez Dr. Patricia Perea English 101 25, October 2012 Are witches real? The witch is defined as,” a person believed to have magical powers; a mean, ugly, old woman.” Webster’s Dictionary .Landoll, Inc. Ashland, Ohio. 1997.(441). In other words, the stereotypical crone with pointed black hat, wart on her nose, flying with her black cat or familiar, on a broom. This cartoon interpretation of the word reaches far back into Western civilization and is reinforced by movies such as The Wizard of Oz ,or Scary/comic witch and cat symbols are used throughout our culture, and the interpretation is particularly prevalent at Halloween. The story of witchcraft is almost as old as human history itself, and was even tolerated by early Catholics until the Roman Catholic Church stepped in. Witchcraft to some, is not a simple formal religion; it lacks a consistent or standardized body of belief. It is also closely believed to be linked to evil. To primitive peoples, witchcraft assigns meaning to the inexplicable by providing a native theory of failure, misfortune, and death. It is an attempt to decode the darker aspects of life that chill the souls of man and to explain through improbable answers, the nature of the vast unknown. Witchcraft evolved in Europe and was later carried to the New World. It consisted of an amorphous body of magical lore closely tied to Devil worship, fertility rites, fortune telling, hexes, and incantations, and problems of health and sickness. The craft was divided for purposes of classification. The first, is the practice of white magic, provided charms or spells for benevolent purposes. The second is witchcraft, black magic, perpetuated evil and was used by persons whose intent was entirely malicious. Finally, is the third degree, the witch went beyond invoking the aid of the Devil and made an actual deal to become his servant. Marc, Simmons. Witchcraft in the Southwest. The Last Conquistador

In the movie The Last Conquistador, there is a controversy going on between John Houser, a sculpture who successfully attempted to create and mount the tallest bronze equestrian statue in the world, and people who funded the building of the statue and Native Americans living in Texas. The Native Americans don’t want the statue of a long-forgotten Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate, branded a terrorist and a genocidal architect by some, to be built. The Native Americans think that Juan de Oñate is anything to celebrate. He killed thousands of the Native Americans’ ancestors and took their lands. While the Native Americans have their points, Houser and his helpers are trying to help out the city of El Paso, Texas. El Paso Texas is one of the poorest cities in the United States. With Houser Building this statue, Revenue from tourists would help the city out. I honestly think that in this situation, everyone needs to understand where everyone else is coming from. The statue was not meant to be demeaning to the Native Americans in anyway and it is a beautiful piece of art that is very well sculpted. But then again, Houser should have done his research and understood how bad of a man Oñate was and realized that putting that statue up where eighty percent of the people living there are of Native American decent wasn’t a good idea. Even though the Oñate statue is beautiful, I believe it should have never gone up in the first place.…
