ABSTRACT

Acne is an aesthetic skin disorder, usually in adolescents, with a clinical manifestation of comedones, papules, pustules, and nodules. The aim of this research was to asses the antibacterial activity of Kaempferia galanga L rhizome against the P.acne bacteria, to know the physical stability of the Kaempferia galanga L extract gel, its safety, and its effectiveness as an anti acne gel for the treatment of mild to moderate degree of acne. Extraction was done by maceration using 96% ethanol. Antibacterial activity testing was observed at concentrations of 0.75%, 1.25%, 1.75%, and 2.25%. The gel with a concentration of 0.75% had an inhibition zone of 11.5 mm in Brucella medium. Based on the physical stability of the Kaempferia galanga L extract gel, the gel had a good physical stability profile. A safety trial, which was evaluated on 12 students, found no irritation nor allergy. Treament using the Kaempferia galanga L extract gel was given to 30 individuals, and treatment using 1.2% clindamycin was given to the other 30 individuals as the positive control. After 3 weeks of evaluation, Kaempferia galanga L extract gel gave a significant (t < 0.01) improvemet on mild as well as moderate acne.
