Joseph Mccarthy Background
The most interesting thing I have earned about Joseph McCarthy can include the fact that he had a mostly clear background. I thought that this man, who spoke out against people so easily, would have no education in the field and was just going off of what people said. If he hadn't said anything about the list, McCarthy would have been very looked up to and respected because of his service in the military, even though it was a desk job, and his work as a judge. He wouldn't have humiliated himself, Owen Lattimore, Val Lorwin, and many other people who he accused. How did a man with such a good, intelligent background come to a place like this?
McCarthy’s background is mostly just clean; examples of how good his life was included the fact that

Joseph McCarthy held congressional hearings in which he often used affiliation and hearsay to accuse people of being communists and a threat to the United States. What was unknown at the time was that while his methods were often distasteful and abusive—and possibly illegal—he did successfully identify some dangerous communists. Do you think he should be considered a patriot or not? Why?…

Communism; a threat to the nation of the United States of America. Many Americans believe that people who believe in Communist teachings are corrupt. In 1950, a historical event happened in the US timeline; the Red Scare. Joe McCarthy became a Senator for the state of Wisconsin in 1947. The Red Scare happened from 1947-1957, “The Cold War, which began after the end of World War II, was a period where Americans were extremely paranoid about the threat of Communism.” (“Background to the Red Scare” Par. 1) The Cold War was a period of time where citizens of the United States feared nuclear warfare with the Soviet Union. Joe McCarthy created a list of names that were people of power who were part of the Communist Party. He took a five-city tour,…

Tim O'Brien, an author and avid reader, grew up near the borders of Iowa and South Dakota in Worthington, Minnesota, a typical small town in Midwestern America. He was born on October 1, 1946, making Tim a member of the post-World War II baby boomer generation. As a scrappy 18 year old, O'Brien traveled to St. Paul and enrolled at Macalester College. Throughout his years in college, O'Brien came to oppose the war in Vietnam. He didn't launch violent protests, as some radical activist groups had done, but instead joined the campaign of Eugene McCarthy, a presidential candidate from 1968 who openly opposed the fighting in Vietnam. O'Brien, who was an excellent student, completed his undergraduate degree by earning a bachelor's degree in…

In contrast to ‘The crucible’, Clooney uses McCarthyism as a reference to his own purpose, which is to stimulate political debate on contemporary modern day issues. Although the film was produced in 2005, Clooney uses black and white as the background; this is to make the film more realistic in relation to context. “I thought it was a good idea to raise the idea of fear to stifle political debate” –George Clooney. By linking with an event from the past, Clooney is able to evoke the idea that history is repeating itself and we are not learning from our mistakes. Edward R. Murrow, a journalist in the CBS news team openly attacks McCarthy’s actions. In essence, he is risking his own social belonging in doing this just as Arthur Miller had done when writing ‘The crucible’. Very few people are willing to rebel against McCarthy’s regime for fear associated with being labeled a communist and losing all connections to society. Murrow though, is able to stand up for his beliefs and publicly attack McCarthy’s corruptness. His views are approved by the majority of the community except by politicians: “I strongly suggest you rethink your stand. These are dangerous waters you attempt to navigate” -A metaphorical caveat by Cornell Johnson, who is speaking to Fred Friendly. However Friendly rejects this threat and proclaims his support for Murrow exemplifying the…

    The Crucible

One similarity that can be clearly seen is the way in which each of events in McCarthyism and the Salem witch trials, had the ability to ruin a person's life through a simple accusation. An example of this is very evident in The Crucible. The character of John Proctor is accused of committing the crime of witchcraft. When it comes time to confess, he knows that confessing will save his physical life, but at the same time it will ruin his reputation. He said "Why must it be written? Why must I say it?" (Miller 138, 140). Proctor knows that his confession will be posted on the church wall for all to see. This is why he ends up tearing up the confession. If it was seen by anyone in the community John Proctor's reputation would be tarnished to the point where he could no longer show his face in Salem. Therefore, he chose death over humiliation. A parallelism of this can be seen in the era of McCarthyism. If one was accused by Senator Joseph McCarthy of being a communist his or her life was ruined. This process became known as blacklisting. President Truman once said "Character assassination is their stock in trade.". This shows how those accused of communism had their lives taken away…

King had tried to stand between two forces, “One is a force of complacency, made up in part of Negro community who, as a result of long years of oppression, are so drained of self-respect and a sense of ‘somebodiness’ that they have adjusted to segregation. The other force is one of the bitterness and hatred, and it comes perilously close to advocating violence.”(King, p472) He conveyed that what he decided to emulate was neither the “do-nothingism” of the complacent nor the hatred and despair of the black nationalist. Based on his willingness to compromise his sense and sensibility, the nonviolent direct action was an excellent way to create a situation which would inevitably open the door to negotiation. The use of compromise is not only a solution to resolving disagreements in negotiation, but also an effective method for settling the conflict between sense and sensibility in everyday life. McCarthy also used the compromise and made up her mind to do the lab, but she would go help anesthetize the dogs first, because helping with the anesthesia, she thought, would be taking full responsibility for what she was doing, something that was very important to her. To make a decision, we must understand the consequences of acting or not acting. And, perhaps most important, we must learn to take responsibility for our decisions. Though McCarthy felt…

McCarthyism not only destroyed the lives and careers of many Americans but also the innocent image of the country. Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin was the same as any man. But when he cried Communism the world seemed to listen.

Following the Cold War between Russia and the United States there came many hardships, such as unemployment and high inflation. These hardships produced a restless society. The society then looked for something or someone to blame (Fried, 39). They found someone to blame. Communists. Throughout the country there was a witch hunt known as the Red Scare. A basic idea was formed: Communism was evil. Anyone who participated in such evil was considered illegitimate and were to be excluded from such things as sharing ideas, and jobs (Reeves, 136). This fear of Communism or anti-Communism as it was called could be described as a type of "virus." When all was calm in America the virus would fade, but the moment a crisis struck, the virus came back stronger than ever (Feuerlicht, 35). Communism was a threat not only for countries overseas but a threat for America and its people. It was a threat on the American way of life, a bruise on the phrase "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." (Feuerlicht, 45) And McCarthy helped spread this fear.

McCarthy and his ways challenged the Bill of Rights. "When free speech or due process are denied to any individual everyone's rights are jeopardized. Today's oppressors may become tomorrow's accursed group." (Feuerlicht, 154) And nothing is guaranteed more than the destruction of America when the freedoms promised by the Bill of Rights are denied (Feuerlicht, 154). McCarthy installed a fear in the people. But people feared tremendously the loss of their jobs. They feared that their political afflictions would reflect on their job status (Reeves, 99). By trying to keep America from becoming a Communist nation, McCarthy and his followers turned the country into an anti - Communist…

    Alfred Rosenberg

Alfred Rosenberg was nothing if not eccentric. It says quite a bit about his thought process when Hitler stopped taking advice from him because he was not as practical. It is very interesting that even Hitler thought he was crazy. Rosenberg was a strong supporter of the Nazi party and worked hard to align himself with Hitler and held several leadership positions within the party. When Hitler was imprisoned in 1924 he appointed Rosenberg as the head of the party and when Rosenberg stood by Hitler in the Beer Hall Putsch Hitler made him a member of the Blood Order. In 1929 Rosenberg organized and became the leader of Combat League for German Culture. This group was in charge of creating and enforcing Nazi ideas on aesthetics and literary arts. In 1934 Hitler rewarded him for his work on aesthetics and placed him in charge of the Office for Supervision of the Total Intellectual and Ideological Schooling and Education of the National Socialist German Workers Party. Then in 1941 he was given the position of Reich Minister for the Eastern Territories. This made him in charge of the civil administration for all German occupied lands in Eastern Europe. While he occasionally protested against SS brutality in the Ukraine he fully cooperated with orders for the Final Solution. It was for direct involvement in this that led to him being convicted and hanged as a war criminal.…
