Before the war, Marti got help financially and politically from people such as Antonio Maceo, Máximo Gómez, Calixto García and others. The war started when Jose Marti arrived in Cuba with the Proclamation of Montecristi which stated that he wanted to free Cuba from Spain's control through war, while keeping all races equal and involved. Marti led this revolution by having many groups of people fight all at once on Fevruary 24, 1895. These groups consisted of Bartolomé Masó commanding in Bayate, Juan Gualberto Gómez and Antonio López Coloma's command in Ibarra, Saturnino with Mariano Lora in Baire, and Periquito Pérez with Emilio Giró in Guantánamo. It was prohibited for regular citizens to carry weapons or ammunition. Because of this, the rebels had to use the element of surprise and truly understand the environment to give them the upper hand. About 60 expeditions were attempted by the U.S. To bring these people weapons to over throw Spain. The Cuban War of Independence sparked hostility towards the Spanish rule in Cuba which got America involved, causing them to have sympathy which later led to the Spanish-American war of 1898. A ship named the USS Maine was commissioned in 1895 and later on, it sunk on its way to Cuba, just getting America more involved since there were conspiracies that Spain was involved with the sinking of the ship. In conclusion, Jose Marti was one of the most important people of Cuba's history. Without him, who knows who would be ruling Cuba as it stands today. His contributions to his country and his heroic actions made him someone that's memory will be carried on in history. Without the Cuban War of Independence led by Marti, it is also possible that Cuba could still be ruled by Spain. This war shaped Cuba as the Cuba we know
