Richard Blanco is an American poet, public speaker, and author. Blanco was born February 15, 1968 in Madrid. As an infant, Blanco immigrated from Cuba to Miami, there he was raised by his family and received an American education. Since 1999 Blanco has traveled and lived in many places such as Guatemala and Brazil. He spent much of his life teaching at multiple universities such as Georgetown, American, and Central Connecticut. Blanco is a member of the Macondo Writers Workshop, this prestigious workshop was founded by Sandra Cisneros. Throughout Blancos life he has many honorable achievements to his name. However none larger and more valuable than when he was named the inaugural poet for Barack Obama's second inauguration on January 8, 2013. Blanco was the fifth person to play this role, and was the first immigrant, first Latino, and first openly gay poet to be the inaugural speaker. This not only brought fame and awareness to Blanco, but it also united many communities and brought people together.…

At the Bernie Sanders rally, he used a variety of techniques while presenting to the group. I noticed when he hit key talking points in his argument; he would use his hands that would elicit a stronger reaction from the crowd. He read his audience demographics well by hitting on housing cost, minimum wage and the high cost of tuition (all very important concerns of college students). However, there were some points he made I felt to be confusing. At one point in his speech, he mentioned how Native Americans were taken advantage of in the past. He tried to say that we should follow the Native American’s lessons and live with nature (and not destroy it with fossil fuel and natural gas exploration). It seemed he used a fallacy to connect two…
In Mercutio’s speech, he talks about a fantastical Queen Mab which depicts him as a very imaginative and spontaneous person. After Romeo reveals his dream, Mercutio begins to tease Romeo: “O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you” (1.4.58). Mercutio comes up with a fictional character on the spot and then makes a long speech about her. He describes her as the fairies’ midwife and as smaller than the stone of a ring. This is something impossible since fairies and tiny women do not exist. The speech also includes details like “Her chariot is an empty hazelnut” (1.4.72) and “Through lovers’ brains, and then they dream of love” (1.4.76). More magical and extraordinary features that are not true in real life. Mercutio is able to invent an imaginary…
This past Sunday I went to Snyder Moral Baptist church to hear the music of Joel Raney. Joel is a very emotional performer I could tell he is very in touch with God. While I was there I learned that he began his career in Alabama by cutting his teeth on hymns and gospel music. He attended Juilliard School in NYC where he also worked in musical theater for a time. Listening to Joel’s music made me feel closer to God, he made me think about the finer things in life through his music. Like having a close relationship with God and letting God know I am what he has made me to be. He made me think about my faith a lot more about how being a Christian isn’t all about showing up at church. Being a Christian is…
It is interesting that Chavez chooses to address Mexican Americans about the misuse of the Church’s funding because they themselves probably do not have much to offer. If his audience does not have much monetary support to offer him, then is his ideal audience too far removed from reality or is this intentional? If this is intentional, he is using his audience to prove that it is not so much about the finances of the people, but how the people of the Church use the money they do have. He must not be saying to give more money, or if he is, then he will probably not be as successful as if he were speaking to a different demographic. Therefore, he must be advocating for the people to spend the Church’s money more wisely and to stop tolerating the passivity of the Catholic Diocese when it comes to social justice.…
What constitutes a great and memorable speech? Following the recent results of the October 19th federal election in Canada, two major speeches were delivered – Justin Trudeau’s victory speech and Steven Harper’s defeat speech. Just as with President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech ("Top 10 Presidential Addresses of All Time"), people with political preference may rank one of the two speeches more highly solely due to the identity of the speaker. Thankfully however, Lifehack provides some invaluable insights on the basic factors of a memorable public address. According to the website, imagery increases the effectiveness of a strong public speech, as does connection with the audience and persuasive, powerful statements. Taking those factors into account will help in evaluating both Trudeau’s and Harper’s speeches with a minimal amount of political bias.…
Colin Powell life is interesting because he was the first African-American Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. The commencement speech Powell gives at Howard University show his willingness and determination to overcome challenges. Not letting his race put a limitations on what he could or couldn’t do, shows that anyone can do anything and be anyone in this nation. It also shows how times have changed from the past from African Americans being slaves to running president and doing great things. Powell speech showed me in an encouraging way that you don’t have to be big or popular to do great things.…
In John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address, the author shifts from a powerful tone to an instructive tone by setting an example for other countries, inspiring the younger generations of Americans, and instructing his fellow Americans. Kennedy shows a powerful and tone when he says “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any for to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” Kennedy also shows a powerful tone to America’s young people when he states, “We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans- born in in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage- and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.” Kennedy then shifts his tone to instructive when he advices his citizens to “ask not what America will do for you- ask what you can do for your country.” Kennedy shifts from a powerful tone to an instructive tone in his inaugural address by setting an example for other countries, inspiring the younger generations of Americans, and by instructing his fellow Americans.…
Rodriguez’s speech means that intellect is not simply defined by going to school and getting conventionally good grades, but by the pursuit of knowledge. He means that education does not end after high school or even college, our minds should constantly be feeding and learning new things so we can continue to grow. Learning is messy, learning contains mistakes, it may look like a series of failures but if you persist you can achieve great things. Learning even looks different on everyone and that is not strange. We can become so focused on just getting by with good grades in school we can forget what an amazing opportunity we have, and when we can access to each other’s minds the possibilities are endless.…

To be a good public speaker, a person needs a very specific set of skills to deliver a powerful speech. In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, a group of men conspire to assassinate Julius Caesar. Throughout the play, they succeed in killing Caesar by stabbing him multiple times. The conspirators have to convince the people of Rome that Caesar is a bad man and he had to be killed for the sake of Rome. Another man by the name of Marc Antony, who was a loyal friend of Caesar, comes and turns the tide over to his favor. He does this by delivering a powerful speech to the people of Rome at Caesar’s funeral. Marc Antony is a skilled orator because he excels at using rhetorical devices such as:ethos, pathos, and logos.…
