Fortinbras’ plans became known to the Danes, as his revenge for his father’s death is turning to the lands they inhabit. Horatio and Bernardo are on watch duty talking about the future of the kingdom when they encounter a ghost; this ghost promotes the idea of wickedness rising in the mind of Fortinbras, and it warns the guards of what is to come. Exacerbated in this quote is the idea Fortinbras has to gain revenge for his father’s death by reclaiming the lands stolen from him. The reader can assume it will not be a peaceful trade, as noted when Horatio mentions: “recover of us, by strong hand…” -- an ode to the military presence Fortinbras has. In Avi's book, Nothing But the Truth, there is a quote from a Shakespearian play. Brutus says, "No Cassius; for the eye sees not itself/But by reflection, by some other things." I think that in deeper terms, this means that a person cannot see how he or she acts unless someone acts the same way or describes it to them. This quote can be applied to the story because Philip Malloy, the main character cannot see himself clearly. In that way, I am like Philip Malloy. I have no perception of whether my actions have positive or negatives effects and always assume that I am right.…

    Modern Day Visigoth

    • 678 Words
    • 3 Pages

Bernard Madoff is a modern day Visigoth for several reasons. He is one of the largest white collar criminals of all time. In fact, he has committed one of the most elaborate Ponzi schemes, which is considered to be the largest financial fraud in history. For those who do not know what a Ponzi scheme is – it is a fraudulent investment that pays returns to its investors from their own money, or the money of other investors, rather than through profits of the organization. The scheme entices investors with large amounts of returns or unusually consistent ones. In order to keep the operation running, new investors must contribute to the cash flow. If the scheme is not interrupted by the authorities, it is likely to fall part for reasons such as the promoter vanishing, the insufficient amount of new investors, or external market factors (such as a decline in the economy). Furthermore, Madoff is a former non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market. Madoff is considered to be a Visigoth for his monumental greed of money, poisonous lust for control, and blunt disregard for the well-being of others.…

In the play Joker in the Pack by Charles Cohen, the lead character, Mitch Parker, is alienated by everyone in his life. The play leads us to believe that Mitch’s Father frequently bullies him and puts him down and makes him feel unworthy. Mitch’s friends also alienate him as they constantly tease him and physical abuse him. During school, the educators put Mitch on the spot, center him out front of the entire class and compare him to his “perfect” older brother Clifford. But worst of all, Mitch alienates himself by fooling around and not taking things serious enough. Overall Mitch is an outsider in his own life which doesn't do much to help his cause. Mitch’s father alienates Mitch plenty of ways by verbally and physically abusing him and by making him…

Oskar Schindler stated, “I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn't stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That's all there is to it. Really, nothing more” (AZ Quotes 1). During World War II, Oskar Schindler stood up to the Nazi party in Krakow, Poland by using false labor records and pleading with Nazi leaders, so they would not send his Jewish factory workers to concentration camps. In 1960, Bernie Madoff founded the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities L.L.C., a small trading firm. Over the years he attracted investors by promising returns between 17-20%, and was said to prefer being a silent partner working through Michael Viennes, and quietly taking many more clients on as feeders without anyone knowing. (Gaviria & Smith, The Madoff Affair). As time went on and new marketing tactics were put in place, everyone who wanted to live the extravagant life joined his client list and investing money into his market fund. As Bernie began to take on more than the legal limit of clients, he was able to discreetly do this by employing licensed CPAs who did not disclose his name in any records to ensure his name was clean so that he would not be caught as being an unregistered investment advisor (Gaviria & Smith, The Madoff Affair).…

In Bernard Madoff's scheme in 2008, the people who fell victim were “Small investors, institutions, hedge funds, global banks, pension funds — all fell victim to usual suspects: a smooth huckster and greed”(Robert Chew). Most global banks and institutions were hurt, but not destroyed by the actions of Bernard Madoff, but the small investors and pension funds were. People who had retired or were saving money for their kids' colleges had invested this money. This did not only affect those who invested, but also the families and children were victims of this one man’s terrible scheme. The perpetrators of these schemes are smooth talking liars who many people learn to trust with their money. A victim of a Ponzi scheme in 2007 said that the perpetrator “ looked us in the eye and said to my wife and I, ‘No one’s ever lost a penny with me, and no one ever will,’” Mr. Gleaves said. “He just blatantly lied.”(Theo Emery). This confidence alludes to those who are investing. The victims believe that the person has their best interests in mind, but in a Ponzi scheme, the perpetrator only has his own goals in mind. Almost every victim of a Ponzi scheme describes the owner as confident and smooth talking. This is a common trait used in order to dupe the victims into investing in their fake companies. There is no singular type of person who can fall victim to a Ponzi…

What can cause a man to take from so many for so long? What kind of human being can make promises that may only be fulfilled if someone else is left holding the bag? Throughout history, there have been many thief’s and cheats who have stole or ‘borrowed’ way past their limits and many who still financially plague society. In recent light, Bernard Madoff is the man on the stand who is still facing his June sentencing date which could be up to 150 years in prison.…

In the past decade, white-collar crime such as illegal insider trading, banking fraud, ponzi schemes, corporate embezzlement and political money laundering has reached an all-time high. In North America alone, respected and highly influential individuals such as Martha Stewart, Bernie Madoff, and Conrad Black have been prosecuted for their crimes and companies such as Fannie Mae and AIG were brought before congressional committees. Unfortunately, while the above individuals were prosecuted and convicted, white-collar crime persists today and the resulting negative economic effects are numerous.…

In essence, the savvy business leader went from rags to riches (Sorkin, 2002). Unfortunately he would pay the cost for his naïveté when he was indicted of “twenty-two counts of larceny conspiracy and securities fraud” which came at time when many white collar crimes were under high scrutiny. Amid that time even Martha Stewart was indicted and sentenced to jail for her white collar crimes (“Tyco CEO Dennis…,” 2011) which make's people wonder if " that’s a good thing " considering that these practices were basic practices in business, and just a few people were sentenced (“Tyco CEO Dennis…”,…
