Hinton’s timeless novel The Outsiders, who has both mental and physical scars from his horrific beating at the hands of the Socs -which not only linger upon his skin, but also penetrate his heart. In chapter two of this engaging and teen-centered novel, we dig deeper into the past of Johnny Cade’s life, thanks in part to a captivating first-person flashback from Johnny’s fellow Greaser, Ponyboy Curtis. The real main character of The outsiders is still Ponyboy. After all it seems like he wrote the book because of one full circle quote. “ When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home…” (Pg 1 and 180). In addition to having him write the book he is ultimately the main character because it is written from his point of view. For example, almost every line in the book has him thinking in it or describing something through his eyes. “I had walked down…” (Pg 31) or “...this church gave me a creepy feeling.” (Pg 67). All in all Ponyboy has changed as a character through the book and is indeed the main character.…

The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

I must say that I never really appreciated reading The Outsiders in high school as I did reading it again this time around. Ponyboy's narrative is such and up and down read that its exactly as if i were speaking to my younger bother except for the gang fights and people dying. Ponyboy’s understanding of the way social groups function and the way each of the group members play such a huge role are way beyond that of a 14 year old. The distorting effects of hatred and rivalry make the reading less then objective. Its a clear cut read that tries to bride a gap between rich and poor, the honored and the treacherousness, all the while having a child grow up before his time and making sense of the senseless.…

“Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset” (41) ponders Ponyboy, a Greaser, when he realizes social class does not define a person. S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders tells of a town where social class splits the citizens into the lower class Greasers, who others view as horrible, selfish, tough, trouble-making criminals, and the upper class Socs or Socials, who the townspeople view as the privileged, wealthy, law-abiding people. Throughout the novel, one Greaser, Ponyboy, comes to realize outer appearance, the way someone looks, does not always determine his or her character or an individual’s distinctive moral and mental qualities. S.E. Hinton uses characters to clearly illustrate…

Change can occur in a variety of ways and forms. However, it doesn’t occur overnight. It requires patience, dedication, and most importantly, a cause. An aspect of this progress can give you a new point of view and make you see things in a new light; either for the better, or worse. In “The Outsiders,” a novel by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy Curtis goes through this evolution of change towards many people; one of them being a member of the gang he’s in, Dallas Winston.…
