John steinbeck "of mice and men"
John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men was published in 1937, it tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers who move from one place to another hoping to find new job opportunities during the Great Depression in California. This book refers to being independent, and finding “yourself”. Loneliness is a significant factor in several characters’ lives. The companionship of George and Lennie is the result of loneliness. Despite the need for companionship, Steinbeck emphasizes how loneliness is sustained through the barriers established from acting inhuman to each other. My favorite character in this book would be George, the reason he is my favorite character is because George (referring back to what the book refers to) is inspired to be independent he is dedicated to being his own boss, and to be successful and have a life like most people would within the Great Depression era. In my opinion George is also kind and helpful mainly because he brought Lennie a long with him on his journey to finding new jobs. My least favorite character would be Curley, this is because Curley uses aggressive nature and high-powered position to try and over take his father’s farm. He was always tellings-off the farm hands and blaming some of them for messing with his wife. Curley’s short body figures is shown by his aggressive acts towards the farm hands for tiny incidents. Anyone with an open minded concept of books, and interprets there readings threw imagery would greatly appreciate the work of John Steinbeck writing Of Mice and men mainly because this book was noted to be a great example of the use of animal imagery. Steinbeck uses animal imagery to stress the key themes of mental illness, racism and the expected tragedy of the ending.

The Salinas River stood stock-still, and the Gabilan Mountains were almost invisible, as they were sheathed by layers of fog. Songbirds did not chirp to their melodies, plants did not sway in the wind, and rabbits did not split from their burrows. Pondering the massive punishment he would receive for the crimes he had just committed, Lennie rushed through the foggy forest to the thick brush, where George would hopefully rendezvous. However, Lennie was oblivious of who or what was after him.…

“‘I can still tend the rabbits, George?’ ‘Sure. You ain't done nothing wrong.’ ‘I di'n't mean no harm, George.’” (Steinbeck) Throughout John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Lennie childishly obsesses over his and George’s plan to have their own piece of land, on which he could tend the rabbits. However, this never came to pass as Lennie was put down like an animal, by George. By writing about the lives of this unfortunate pair, Steinbeck addresses many thematic ideas such as having power and being powerless, the difference between right and wrong, and dreams and reality that help the reader better understand the human condition.…

Even though the story ends with heartache, it still doesn’t remove the fact that Lennie and George knew that their friendship kept them going. John Steinbeck brings the time period of the 1930s to life in Of Mice and Men. The story captures the tale of two men, George and Lennie, use friendship and a dream to overcome challenges. Piece by piece as challenges add, it ends with serious consequences. Many diseases and disorders were not discovered until fairly recent years. This is the case for a disorder called autism. John Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” was set during the Great Depression, and the story portrays a man named Lennie with a disorder that people during that time did not understand, so they treated him as if he were mentally impaired. Today, Speech-Language pathologists recognize Lennie as being autistic. “Of Mice and Men” portrays the characteristics of autism and how people who were ignorant of the true disorder crudely handled the situation. This story shows readers how much progress the field of Speech-Language pathology has made in diagnosing and treating people who suffer from autism.…
