John Erikson's Theory Of Psychological Development
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the youngest man to be elected as president at the age of 43 and was also the first Roman Catholic president (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). He was born in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1917 and was a very sick child. His grandparents were immigrants from Ireland who were politicians in Boston (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). He grew up with his 8 siblings and a very supportive family, including his father. Kennedy was in college when WWII started and in 1940, after he graduated from Harvard, he and his brother joined the Navy (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). Erikson’s stages occur over the entire lifespan unlike Freud’s theory. Kennedy was a man that believed that people in the world are capable of making it better. Erikson’s theory would conclude that the reason for this belief is that he successfully developed trust and had his needs met as a child (PSU,2018). Kennedy was also the youngest man to be elected president which means that he knew that he possessed skills to lead people. Erikson’s third stage of develop dictates that if a child learns assert themselves through social interaction they will feel capable (PSU, 2018). Kennedy, according to Erikson, would have learned to play with others well while asserting oneself in order feel confident enough to lead others. Another reason for Kennedy’s confidence is that he successfully completed the industry vs. inferiority stage. There are numerous letter that Kennedy received from his father telling him that he is confident that his son will be successful despite his shortcomings in school (JFK Libraries & Museums, 2018). As previously stated Kennedy was married, but had multiple affairs.
