JK Rowling and the Harry Potter series

Little was known to me about J.K. Rowling, except that she was the author of the

critically acclaimed book and movie series “Harry Potter”. After watching the video of her

commencement speech that was given at Harvard University, I became motivated to do some

research on the author’s life. Rowling grew up in a household with her father who was an

engineer for Rolls Royce, her mother, and younger sister Dianne. After completing secondary

school, she went on to college to study modern languages. While attending Exeter University,

Rowling spent a year in Paris to learn French before finally graduating and moving on to work at

Amnesty International, an organization that campaigns

back to London, Rowling came up with the idea for Harry Potter. That same night she began

writing “The Philosopher’s Stone”, now known as “The Sorcerer’s Stone”. Later on that year,

Rowling would be devastated by a series of unfortunate events. At the age of 45, her mother

passed away after battling with multiple sclerosis for ten years, and she would soon find out that

father had been having an affair and planned to wed his mistress.

Months later, she moved to Portugal to teach English at a language institution and

eventually married a Portuguese man. Although the marriage did not work out, she had been

given the best thing in her life, her daughter Jessica. Now as a recently divorced, single mom,

she went back to England to live with her sister Dianne. Rowling wanted to begin teaching

again, but knew that if she did, finishing her book would be near impossible. Without a job, she

had to survive on welfare while caring for her daughter and working to complete her book. After

sending out copies of the manuscript, she finally received word that “Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s

Stone” would finally be

Another masterful interest for the high school Potter was composing a diary in a code nobody could read. The Journal of Beatrix Potter 1881-1897 (initially distributed by Frederick Warne in 1966) is a piece of this record, interpreted from code by Potter researcher Leslie Linder. She kept this kind of diary until the age of…

Kloves was sent a "raft" of synopses of books proposed as film adaptations, with Harry Potter being the only one that jumped out at him. He went out and bought the book, and became an instant fan. When speaking to Warner Bros. he stated that the film had to be British, and had to be true to the characters. David Heyman was confirmed to produce the film. K.’s path to her success. The one that stands out the most is her mother’s death. She had the type of relationship with her mother I always wished to have. Having watched her mother go through a rapid form of this disease has left a huge imprint on her life. She joined the MS Society of Scotland, becoming a Patron (Rowling, Inside MS, 2002), to promote awareness and strive for a better treatment. Another notable obstacle came with worldwide fame of the HP book series and the international success of the film series based on her book, which is the amount of controversy generated over the years. From accusations of teaching children to practice witchcraft, to having her books burned, and having people attempt to stand in the way of her getting awards and recognition for her work; she has held strong to her views and continued to…

JK Rowling’s choice of settings, quest and battles in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is closely connected with cultural history of Britain. These elements influence Rowling’s narrative much more than the average reader would think. Throughout the next paragraphs in this paper I will support my thesis that JK Rowling used British cultural history facts as an inspiration for her book. With that in mind JK Rowling made her book so realistic that readers digest her story easy and with ease and joy.…

In fantasy story telling the protagonist travels on an internal quest and external adventure. The external adventure delves into the situational adventure of the main character. This indicates the physical adventure, how the life of the protagonist unfolds to the reader. The internal quest dictates how the character grows emotionally. The internal quest is important in that it shows how the inner turmoil of the character transforms. This transformation from the protagonist that sees the world from a single view in the beginning of the novel to the overall picture towards the end of the novel. In this essay I will discuss how the authors of the novels “J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and “Kenneth Oppel, Sunwing” handle the convention of both the internal and external situations they depict upon their characters Harry and Shade.…

Success is a two-headed dragon, with great success also comes great criticism. To be successful, a person should be able to take one with another, take the criticism in stride and use it. J.K. Rowling, the world renowned author of the Harry Potter series, does just that with criticism like “…written for people whose imaginative lives are confined to TV cartoons,” (Byatt) and also being called “derivative and clichéd” (Del Negro). Not only does she not let the criticism she has received affect her, but she uses it as leverage to become an even greater writer.(Wilson) For every bad thing that was said about Rowling and her writing, there were good things being said by the tenfold, “…quite likely the books will become popular classics.” and “…engagingly written; they are well-paced; they make enjoyable a read-aloud, either at home or in the classroom.” (Del Negro).…

The Harry Potter series is an international literature phenomenon that is both criticised and cherished. Penned by renowned author J.K. Rowling the story of the boy wizard seems to break the barriers of age, race, religion and gender with the range of its fans. This investigation focuses on the Harry Potter series and intends to answer the question of Harry Potter: Selfish or Selfless under the topic of Altruism in Contemporary Young Adult Literature. This investigation is a literature review; unlike a science experiment this report requires are more in-depth analysis of literature on the chosen topic. The intentions of the research are to investigate the topic of Altruism within the Harry Potter series, specifically the choices and sacrifices that the protagonist, Harry Potter, and the antagonist, Tom Riddle or Lord Voldemort. The key findings of this report are the close relationship between the choices and sacrifice both the protagonist and the antagonist and the defining difference between a hero and a villain within the Harry Potter series; this report also focuses on the ‘final’ sacrifice of the protagonist within in the final Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. One very important key finding that this report will discuss is that Harry Potter is a teenage boy who just so happens to be a wizard; he is not a wizard who happens to be a teenage boy. The define line between the two statements is what influences many of the choices and sacrifices, and also provide the essence of the story being a journey of a hero that symbolizes the efforts of youth, offering some insights into the inconstancies within humanity.…

Have you ever heard about her “rags to riches” life story? She started to write this novel when she was on a four-hour-delayed train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. The idea for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry "came fully formed" into her mind at that time. However, the sudden death of her mother due to multiple sclerosis had heavily affected her writing. As you look through the Harry Potter first book, you will find out that she introduced much more detail about Harry's loss, because she knew about how it felt. Her marriage had failed once and by that time, she became a jobless single mom with a dependent child. She even had to survive on state welfare support. She described her failure as a stripping away of inessential. However as the saying goes, “when there’s a will, there’s a…
