To fully understand the band we must first find out who they are and what made them Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band formerly called “My Backyard,” was formed in the summer of 1964 by four teenage friends, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns. Early on the band was influenced by Southern Blues along with country and western music. However, the band also attributes its sound to much of the earlier British bands of the British Invasion, such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Free. The band was later renamed to Lynyrd Skynyrd as a tribute to there gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, a Mr. Leonard Skinner. In 1972 the band was signed to MCA Records by Al Kooper after they impressed him at a club in Atlanta called Funocchio’s. Kooper later went on to produce their first album called (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) which featured the hit songs “Free Bird”, Gimme Three Steps”, and “Simple Man”. The album went multi-platinum in 1973. Their next album Second Helping debuted in 1974 and featured the bands most popular song to date ”Sweet Home Alabama”. Second Helping went multi-platinum in 1974 reaching #12 on the charts. Later, in 1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd released its third album Gimme Back My Bullets but did not reach the same success as the other two. Sadly on October 20, 1977 a charter plane carrying Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines crashed killing all three. The band would…

Innovating with fuzztone and feedback, they produced classics. When Samwell-Smith left the band, musician Jimmy Page was recruited as bassist until Dreja could learn the bass. After Dreja mastered the bass Page then moved up as second lead guitarist alongside Beck. The new lineup recorded only four songs, which they preformed a couple of times. Then Beck decided to leave and go off on his own. While Beck's stint with the band only lasted about 18 months, in this period he did a lot to influence the sound of 1960’s rock…

In 1958, a brother and sister started a small record label called "Satellite " in Brunswick, Tn. Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton had a dream of putting out records and recording artists of all types. They both took out loans and mortgage, and quit their jobs, too make this dream come true. During the spring months of 1959, Stewart recorded and produced his first black group, the Veltones (Stax Records, 2011). In 1960, they moved the label back to Memphis, to rent the old Capitol Theater located at College and Mclemore. There they converted the candy shop that located next door to the theatre into a small record shop to make extra income for the recording studio. They named the record store "Satellite Records."…

Instead of attending a concert and writing a concert report, I decided to do the radio report. On April 24, 2007, I listened to the station WWOZ 90.7 FM from seven to eight p.m. It was hosted by Jivin Jean and Neal. The theme of that session was the 50's Rhythm and Blues. Because the Jazz Fest is approaching, they decided to feature some of the artists that would be performing. In which they varied from Percy Sledge to the Fister Sisters.…

Curb Records, celebrating 50 years of running since its opening in 1963 by a man named Mike Curb. During that 50 years Mike Curb and Curb records have accumulated four hundred thirty two number one records, one thousand five hundred and fourteen top ten records , and four thousand five hundred and eighteen charted records resulting from being one of the most successful independent labels to come about. Through their early years in the running they worked with artists such as Eric Burdon & War, the Stone Poneys, Sammy Davis Jr., The Osmond Family, The Righteous Brothers, Exile, Solomon Burke, GLoria Gaynor, the Hondells, the Arrows, Roy Orbison, Shaun Cassidy, Debby Boone, the Electric Flag, the Sylvers, and the Four Seasons. In 1969 Curb had the great opportunity to join MGM records and have even more success with artists such as Kenny Rodgers, Hank Williams Jr., Don Gibson, Mel Tillis, Ray Stevens, and Eddy Arnold. A decade later moving into the 1980’s Curb Records was responsible for signing artists such as The Judds, Lyle Lovett, Don & Phil Everly, Desert Rose Band, Sawyer Brown, Jeffrey Steele’s band Boy Howdy, Ronnie McDowell, Hal Ketchum and The Righteous Brothers, and The Bellamy Brothers. As an independent record label they were doing very well in the 80’s. Going into the 90’s is when they really started to pick up. The main artist that made Curb Records much money would be Tim McGraw. By the twenty first century Curb had “one of the strongest country rosters in Nashville,” with artists such as Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Hank Williams Jr., Wynonna, Clay Walker, Rodney Atkins, Trick Pony, and LeAnn Rimes.[i]…

On November 22, 2013, I went to the B.B Kings Restaurant and Blues club in downtown Nashville. From five o’clock to nine o’clock at night, Carl Stewart Band played. Then from nine o’clock to one o’clock in the morning the B.B King all-stars played. I did not stay that late though. The Carl Stewart Band was mainly blues with a little bit of light rock. They had acoustic guitars, electric guitar, drums and a few more instruments. All of their songs seemed to have related to life and the things everyday people deal with. Carl Stewart is the singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Richie Gayner is the lead guitar player. Dan Putellie plays the drums. Lastly, Rob Swinton is in charge of the base. It was hard to hear due to all of the people partying, but a few songs that I caught the names of are Initiation, Finally Over, and Look at You. I do not typically like this kind of music, but I really liked their performance. They all played very well together and I liked the lyrics of their songs.…
