A1. Utah Symphony Strengths and Weaknesses

(0) Unsatisfactory

(2) Satisfactory
The candidate does not provide a plausible analysis of the financial and leadership strengths and weaknesses of the Utah Symphony before the merger.  The candidate provides a plausible analysis, with insufficient support, of the financial and leadership strengths and weaknesses of the Utah Symphony before the merger.  The candidate provides a plausible analysis, with sufficient support, of the financial and leadership strengths and weaknesses of the Utah Symphony before the merger.

When picking out the strengths and weaknesses of the symphony there isn’t a list to which you can refer. Rather, you will want to read the case study carefully and use your insight to discover indications of strengths and weaknesses in the data provided in the case. Be sure to cite examples and to address all four required areas including: financial strengths/financial weaknesses & leadership strengths/leadership weaknesses of the symphony. The key will be to think deeply about the facts of the case and to provide insightful responses.

When considering financial strengths and weaknesses some items that you might consider include: profitability, stability, capital availability, reliance on revenue streams, fundraising, endowment sizes, expense structures, policies that affect finances, etc. Focus on anything that you believe would affect the finances of the organization in a positive or negative way.

When considering leadership strengths and weaknesses your focus should be on the leader of the symphony, Keith Lockhart. What are his strengths and how would they improve his effectiveness as a leader? What are his weaknesses that would lessen his effectiveness as leader? Are there any vacant key positions in the organization that might also influence the leadership of the symphony? Think about the music and business experience that Lockhart has or doesn’t have. How could apparent music or business experience or a lack of music or business experience be a leadership strength or weakness?

Make sure that you include sufficient details and examples regarding each strength and weakness. For a hypothetical example; if I were to indicate that the symphony had a profit I would further indicate whether this was a strength because it was significant or, I could as easily support that if the profit was so small in relation to its expense structure, that the level of profitability was actually a financial weakness. You would then explain why this is a strength, or a weakness, and provide justification for your response. Providing sufficient support for each strength or weakness you identify is a key aspect of this section of the assessment.
