A prominent family in American political history I would explore with my students to get them excited about researching their own genealogies is the genealogies of the Kennedy family. When researching the Kennedy’s genealogy, a resource I would use in my classroom is abcnews.com where all the information about the Kennedy’s family history is easily assessable and available for free. This interactive website provides the Kennedy family tree which begins with the first generation of Kennedys, Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. This website allows you to continue researching about this family by showing four generations of Kennedy’s. By clicking on the second-generation tab you are able to see all the children Joseph and Rose had and who they married. Once you click on a certain child like John Kennedy you can see his wife Jacqueline and their children and whom they married in the third generation tab and finally in the fourth generation tab you are able to see what would be Johns and Jacqueline’s grandchildren. This website allows you to go back at any time and look at the different aspect of the family tree by going back to any generation and clicking on a different child. This shows the students how large and complex genealogies can be. This website will get the students interested in genealogy and get them to make connections to people they already know. For example, I would go back to the second-generation tab and change John Kennedy to Eunice Kennedy
