The Impressive Characteristics of Jem Finch In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Jem Finch is an interesting character. Throughout the book he displays several qualities which make him an interesting character. These qualities include curiosity, confidence and sensitivity. Jem is also a very thoughtful young boy. Throughout this novel Jem Finch shows us many of his emotions. Jem Finch is a very curious young man. During the story Jem is always wondering about one of his neighbors, Boo Radley. He is very curious to see what the inside of the Radley house looks like. One night Jem and his sister Scout went into the Radley yard. When they were leaving Jem’s pants got caught on the fence. Then he returned to get his pants and “...they’d been sewed up” (Lee 78). After Jem told this to Scout they both knew that Boo …show more content…
While the trial continued Jem began to obtain feelings for the colored community. If any situations arose during the time of the trial Jem would defend the blacks. When the trial ended and Tom was charged guilty Jem could not understand why anyone would do that to such an innocent man. Everyone could tell that Jem did not act like his normal self after the trial ended. Then when the guards shot and killed Tom at the prison, Jem took it very hard. As Atticus and Scout stated “So many things happened to us…” (Lee 326). After all that happened over the summer Jem just needed time to comprehend all that went on. As we can see throughout this novel Jem is curious, confident, and sensitive. Jem shows us he is curious about the Radley house, towards the beginning of the story. He always wondered about about Boo and the Radley family. During the trial he is very confident that Atticus will win the case and Tom can go back to his everyday life. Then at the end Jem is very sensitive about all that happened during the summer. From this novel we can conclude that Jem Finch is a very curious, confident, and sensitive young

    As Jem and Scout are watching the judge convict, Scout starts to cry, but Jem does the opposite. “‘It ain’t right’ he muttered, all the way to the corner of the square where he found Atticus waiting”(pg.284). When readers examine this passage, they are able to sense this feeling of Jem transitioning into Mr.Finch. As he is hearing the convict, a feeling of anger overpowers him, enabling him to see how racism is affecting the South deeply. This contributes to the theme by showing Jem’s turning point from a kid to a mature man. Also, his perspective plays a huge role in this, as his anger is controlling his actions. Since Scout hasn’t realized the power of racism yet, her emotion are just for Tom, not for the movement.
