People have personal insecurities that tend to make out as jealousy. No matter if it’s a relationship or a friendship. Many characters possessed some type of insecurity that allowed them to have a jealous tendency. This not only happened in the play but it
Othello believes his wife (Desdemona) is having a affair with Cassio. For the simple reason Iago claims Cassio has been sleeping with Othello’s wife. Since Othello is so gullible, Iago leads him “by the nose”. Iago plants a seed of jealousy inside of Othello because apparently he has some insecurity. (“After sometime, to abuse Othello’s ear that he (Cassio) is too familiar with his wife. He hath a person and smooth dispose to be suspected framed to make women false”.)p 42
Bianca is also in the same position. She believes Cassio is having an affair because of his lack of appearance. She has not seen Cassio, and when she finally does, she receives a gift that possessed another women fragrance. (“Bianca whose jealous over Cassio motivates her every word and action, reproaches him on her first appearance with an alleged seven days and nights of neglect.”)p
Iago believes he’s far more qualified than Cassio, who lacks Iago’s experience on the field of battle. Clearly, iago seems pretty jealous. But this is the real reason Iago sets out to destroy Othello? Or, is this merely an excuse to go after him? In other words, does Iago say of this in order to manipulate Roderigo? (Roderigo is completely envious of Othello fro marrying Desdemona). (“I hate the moor, and it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets he has done my office, I know not if’t be true; but I, for mere suspicion in that kind will do as if for surety.”)p42
Othello began to question Desdemona about the situation and the affair, but she started to act suspicious. Desdemona didn’t really know how to act within the situation. She didn’t understand what Othello’s problem was and assumed that it was pressure because of the war and everything that he was going through. Iago lied to Othello making him believe that the handkerchief that he gave to his wife (Desdemona) was in Cassio’s possession and it was given to him
