Jazz Brass Band Concert
At the jazz brass band concert on November 4, the band consisted of instruments such as the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba (specifically, a sousaphone), snare drum, and bass drum. There were seven performers in the ensemble, with one person alternating between the clarinet and saxophone, four people playing brass instruments, and two people playing percussion. The percussionists remained in the back, while the brass sections were in the front filling out the left and right side of the performance space, and the leader of the group moving freely around the front but remaining mostly to the right side. The performance started out with the musicians entering the room one by one as they played and opening song, and settling down in their positions. I really enjoyed the movement and the energy they brought with them into the room because it seemed to wake most of the audience up, as some had been waiting for a while. One of my favorite sounds to hear within the music was that of the tuba, which provided the bassline heartbeat. It …show more content…
In between sets, the performers would speak about jazz history and how the purpose of jazz back in the day was to get everybody dancing and happy, and in being told that, it allowed me to listen closer to the music and try to feel what that was like. Looking around the room during the performance, I would see a number of people nodding their heads or tapping their feet along to the music. Even people who didn’t initially seem interested in the performance upon arriving looked genuinely interested in the performance because the music sounded so inviting. It made me curious to see what it would be like to watch a jazz band perform in a real venue where you can get up and actually dance. I would really consider attending another performance in the future just to feel that same intense atmosphere that was created that

Jazz is just one of the many genres of music in the world, but almost anyone can recognize a musical piece as jazz by the rhythm or the improvisation. However, there is more to jazz than the rhythm and improvisation; there is also the chorus structure, harmonic progression, and the instrumentation. In addition, an important element of jazz is the ensemble because it mixes different harmonizing instruments used in jazz to produce a singular sound as demonstrated by the UIC Jazz Ensemble. The UIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Andy Baker, enlisted various instruments from piano to saxophone in order to perform a wide range of jazz numbers. The ensemble played various jazz tunes by several composers and arrangers. Additionally, the program offered…

When I think of Jazz I think of a small group of performers usually consisting of a trumpet, saxophone, and a small drum normally, enacting on the sidewalk or small building. It also brings to mind a poetry slam where everyone is snapping their fingers and there is a drum accompanying the one who is sharing poetry. The Swinging River Jazz band is a more modern jazz performance and was a little different than what I expected as far as the size and the arrangement. Jazz it a lot more classical now. I really like both the old version of it and the new version of it.…

performance. I love that they use Benny Goodman’s composition to end the whole concert because it really brought the 1920’s big bang jazz’s feeling back to the audience. I think the repertoire for this performance was good because there were a mix of many different styles, such as contemporary pieces, swing, blues, free jazz, and etc. In my…

It wouldn’t allow anyone to fall asleep if they wanted to, and you just felt the bang on your chest. Well, at least I did. Sergeant Sara Sheffield who is part of the Marine Band, presented each piece before the band performed it and also sang a few pieces. One of the songs that she sang was “Amazing Grace”. Her mezzo soprano voice is absolutely amazing and I envy the way she made it seem so easy to be on stage and sing in front of people so calmly and effortlessly.…

The drummer did an awesome job at the intro, which led to such wonderful consonance of trombone, trumpet and saxophones. The musician made great jumps on the stage. There were no rule; everyone just wanted to have fun. Everyone started shouting “hey!” as the song went on. The rhythm section did a great job on keeping the beat full, strong and steady through the entire song. In my opinion, the climax of the song was reached at the swung note when the trombonist was “feeling the music”. Once again, the drummer and the upright bass-er ended the sone…

On Friday, December 6th, I attended the Sac State Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The show began with special guests Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz. This young group of singers were extremely talented for their age. They held their harmonies and expressed their talents in each piece they performed. It was quite impressive and heartwarming because these students looked so into the music that it showed the passion they have for singing and vocal jazz. Following these talented young students, the Sac State Jazz Singers came on stage and did an excellent job at their pieces as well. I appreciated the song choices and arrangements for each piece. They definitely showed the hard work and practice they put into each piece and I overly enjoyed the show they put on. With all of the songs from both groups, dynamics, harmonies, unison, scatting, and different rhythms, especially in 4/4 time signature, were portrayed throughout.…

    Salsa Jazz Concert Report

It’s not really the type of concert I would have typically gone to for fun but I did enjoy myself. I think the fact that it was salsa made it more interesting since I am Hispanic. I caught myself bobbing my head to the rhythm, clapping my hands, and tapping my foot in some of the performances. One of my friends was in the concert so it was nice to see him play on the drums and how he had a solo. Also another guy from my jazz class was in the concert and he played very well and it was riveting to see the way he played his solo on the sax. I don’t know if I would ever go to another jazz concert for fun but who knows maybe I would if it was a salsa one. I am glad that I got to go and see this because I probably would not have experienced this if it wasn’t because I had to. It did open up my eyes more to the world of jazz and seeing how different it is to see them playing live than from a computer or just listening to the songs. To see it all happening was fascinating. I would tell anyone that they should go some time in their life to a jazz concert, specifically a salsa one. If I out of everyone enjoyed it than anyone…

    Jazz concert review #2

On Sunday May 2, 2004 I attended a jazz concert with some classmates. The program was entitled Jazz at the Stockmarket. We kind of got lost on the way so we only saw the second half of the show. The Sacramento based musicians were Jim Malone on keyboard, Steve Krohn who played both the guitar and keyboard, Rich Defazio an amazing drummer. That night the band was featuring Ken Stout who is an incredible tenor saxophone player, and also a guest appearance vocalist by the name of Debbie Defazio. There was also a tremendous bass player but his name was not on the program. There was a count off and the music began with a jam-packed house. The first song was called Equinox by John Coltrane. I know I have heard this piece played before at one time or another. When the band played it they added a little taste of their own to it. The song was unique. Ken Stout played two remarkable solos; one in the beginning and on at the end. The Bass player was just fantastic; he flowed with everyone flawlessly in the first piece. The next two bits were written by Steve Krohn, which he dedicated to his three-year-old daughter. One was called Nicole's song. This part of a set was very diverse it included mixes of Christmas and cartoon songs, which blended together perfectly. The song started with a guitar then the saxophone and drums meshed in together. I really enjoyed this piece since it reminded me of the old cartoons I used to watch plus it just made you feel happy inside. I looked around and everybody in the building had a fat smile on his or her face. The next song was entitled Pleasing the Queen. It began with the drummer snapping on the symbols. This song was awesome because there was a total of six solos in the piece. There was some real talent in the band you could feel it in the air.…

On April 29th, 2011 I went to watch "FRIDAY NIGHT JAZZ SERIES –PHIL RANELIN QUINTET" at the Performing Arts Center in Santa Monica. The Phil Ranelin Quintet show was my fourth jazz concert and was really looking forward to the event. I still do not fully understand jazz music but I can feel the music in my soul. I was started learning about jazz music from my Music 33 class. I believe that this concert I attend gives me a chance to look deeper into jazz music and American culture.…

I went to Mr. O’Neal’s second jazz concert today, which took place at a little bit far but very nice jazz studio in San Pedro. There was a beautiful neighborhood nearby, and it was the first time I’ve ever been to San Pedro. I was kind of tired since I went there right after I got off from work, but I still be excited and couldn’t wait for the wonderful music. My friends and I had a seat before the concern really started, it was a warm and sweet little room. Then I looked at the little stage in front where Mr. O’Neal’s going to perform later, it was just fit to everything. I like the design of the stage: they had colorful lighting on five separate pieces pure white background , a new classic piano, a bright blue jazz drum which I like the best, and a set of red African drum, they really made me look forward to the show. My friend also ordered the pizza the Mr. O’Neal recommended, and we were ready to enjoy the concert!…

The UF Jazz Band Concert was an energetic, exciting and very entertaining. The University Auditorium provided a great atmosphere and vibe for the concert. From the start of the concert, it was very obvious how passionate all of the musicians and the director were about their performances. The band consists of five saxophone players, four trumpet players, five trombone players, and a rhythm section with guitar, piano, drums, and bass players. On saxophone were John Milado, Dustin Ferguson, Ben Greer, Monica Bello and Gregory Snider. On the trumpets were Sean Bokinsky, Mark Kindy, Anthony Bobo and Bobby Polidan.
