Jay Z: Why I Like To Pee
I like to pee because peeing is fun. Fun peeing is fun because it's fun to pee. Why is it fun to pee? Because you can get rid of the water in your stomach. Sometimes its yellow. Sometimes it blue. Sometimes its pink. Most of the time its yellow. Even though its supposed to be white. If its yellow you ain't be drinking a lot of water. You gotta be thirstay yo. yo. yo. yo. thirstay. Like Jay Z. Be a playa.

As I read the essay, “Trayvon Martin and I ain't shit” by Questlove, I could already see the inaccurate negative responses pile up in the original posting on facebook. Not for his writing or stance on the case but for his revelation that the world we live in today is still very racist. I felt the pain and inconvenience of a man who lived his life to extreme measures, to protect others while belittling himself. Questloves size, and race prohibited him from living his life to his full potential because he was afraid of the backlash he would have received. Though he tried his hardest, he could not avoid the inevitable scrutiny that people gave him due to his skin color. His particular story about the women in his building complex, really opened…

According to Maxine Baca Zin and Bonnie Thorton Dill authors of Differences and Domination, the reason as to why we add so much emphasis on race and gender is based on the “socially ranked and rewarded. It is the social response to these biological characteristics that result in inequality” (Zin and Dill 4). They continue to add emphasis on women of color, that “women of color [are] subordinated […] because patters of hierarchy domination, and oppression [are…] built into the structure of society. Inequality, in other words, is structured socially” (Zin and Dill 4). What Zin and Dill are stating is reiterating Sojourners Truth speech, they capture the same essence. It can be interpreted in Ain’t I a Women?, that Sojourner Truth believes that women during the time period of slavery are only being oppressed to do the fact that over previous years, people grew up with the idea of slavery in their mind. By having such ideology at such a young age it begins to form the way you think when one is much older; thus, creating a never ending cycle. In addition, Sojourner Truth does not only address black women being oppressed by society, but also women as a sex. That they will always be oppressed by men; it is not to say that everyone internally wants to be a man, in fact they are proud of their role in society.…

In Russell Banks novel, Trailerpark, there are many different stories that compare different kinds of people, and their personalities. In almost every story there is always a main character that has a problem. He uses his stories to show the reality of life, and all the bad things that come along with it. In Banks story, Comfort, he says, “ Its not so much that you will say things when drunk that you’d never say when sober, as much as you will try to say things you’d ordinarily know simply could not be said. It’s your judgment about the sayable that goes, not your inhibition”(124). Banks is using this story to show how people sometimes communicate when they’re drinking, and how people use drinking to talk about something that they normally wouldn’t talk about.…

Boyz n the Hood is a vivid video representation of what life is like for those who live in the hood. There are two families that were the focus within the movie: The Styles and The Bakers. The director of the movie, John Singleton, wants his viewers to compare the lives of the individuals within the movie to their own lives so there could be a change in our society. He discretely expresses the importance of a good upbringing by a fatherly figure. I believe that this made the difference with the two families. It made all the difference to be brought up in the right circumstances.…

History has constantly brought upon leaders and individuals who stands up against the corrupt society he and many others face. Those “leaders” express their profound thoughts for both him and the many others that are too afraid to speak out. One of the most notorious writers in American history and is known for his transcendental ideals. However, today’s society lacks individuals who parallels with Whitman. Lupe Fiasco represents the Modern American voice speaking out against the degrading world society and does so by influencing the public through their appeal of music. He rejects and contrasts from the negative influences of the world and uses his music to contradict those who degrade our society. Born in the west side of Chicago Illinois, Fiasco grew up opposing what most other kids in his time regarded as their inspiration. Unlike the others he grew up around, Fiasco took interest in literature spending most of his time reading books and comics. Inspired by artist such as Spice 1 and Ice Cube, he slowly began to develop the personality that compares to Whitman and started to write lyrics that condemns our society’s negative influences. Fiasco’s music career began when he was featured in Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky”. His performance caused widespread popularity and soon began his first album “Food & Liquor” which was produced by his inspiration and mentor, Jay-z. The album’s release marked the start of his rise to fame and was followed by “The Cool” and “Superstar”. His songs are primarily directed toward the negativity of society and hope to influence his audience into creating a better society. His lyrics and writing style displays his individualistic ideals, often portraying the importance of one’s independence.…

With the help of technology hip-hop has become a global movement. This newfound globalization has connected different people by one love of the hip-hop culture. Some ways in which people connect through hip-hop include international organizations and competitions. A prime example is Hip Hop International (HHI), the creators of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. HHI puts on a world competition each year for dance crews to compete for a world title in Las Vegas. While it is a competition, it is also an opportunity for dancers to meet other dancers from other countries. Other ways to people to connect are through the Internet with collaborations on music. An example is the collaboration of Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap (Black Eyed Peas, USA) with CL…
