Jay Dawg Speech
Some of you may know me as Jason Sklar, but since I’ve been locked up, I only go by the name of Jay Dawg. I graduated from high school which has allowed me the opportunity to take online classes at Clark College. I’m currently residing in Larch Correctional facility because of some mistakes I made in the past. To be honest, I don’t think I belong here; sure I might’ve snuck my way into a few homes, allegedly. I wouldn’t be here now if one of the unlucky homeowners hadn’t waken up and cornered me in the master bath. There was a scuffle that occurred which I’m not proud of, but I’m trying to change my ways. Because of security reasons, I can’t be on this field trip in person. I have the honors of listening to the video option provided by the …show more content…
It was a radical difference from never having a run in with the law to portraying someone convicted of a crime. In addition, I realize now how much I take my freedom for granted. It became clearly how much others are missing out on because they’re trapped in a jail cell while civilization continues on without them. The video only contained audio and lacked video which left much up to my imagination. Many people get the chance to experience at least two of the senses while I was left to wander how the garden smelt, felt, and looked …show more content…
There are situations I would be considered a target, I am female as well as having a lack of religion, especially spending nearly all of my life living it the South has caused some tension from others. My stance on environmental justice would qualify me a target because there are many agents in place attempting to deny climate change and even destroy sacred land with the DAPL in the Dakotas. On the other hand, being a white American of Western European heritage from the middle class as allowed me to be an agent and easily strive in the oppressive society we live in today. For Jay Dawg, I believe that in most situations he would’ve been an agent but he fell down a dark path that caused him to become a target. He and many other prisoners aren’t given the option to experience nature in their own way since they must always be supervised. Even though I may be young, I believe that I hold at least some or more than people my age and older. Taking on the role of someone nearly the complete opposite of me was both exciting and a learning experience. As someone who will never have to face the inside of a jail cell, it led to to a few conclusions. I’ve seen many television shows with prisoners and seeing what they face everyday seems unimaginable. This experience gave me the ability to see how fortunate I am to not have to be trapped in a cage and I have the freedom to experience

“Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today.” I chose to put this quote on my paper bag because it is a quote that I believe everyone should live by, and it is also my life’s motto. I also chose to decorate this bag with fall leafs for two reasons. One, because fall begins on September 22nd, and two, fall is one of my favorite seasons. Now I will show you a few things that both describe me and are most important to me.…

In my opinion, I though the film was powerful and overwhelming at times. As, the public figures and political activists gave a lot of information. Analyzing the film, you see how America’s complex prison system affects people of color. It is shocking. Because despite living in a country that gives liberty to all…

This past Sunday I went to Snyder Moral Baptist church to hear the music of Joel Raney. Joel is a very emotional performer I could tell he is very in touch with God. While I was there I learned that he began his career in Alabama by cutting his teeth on hymns and gospel music. He attended Juilliard School in NYC where he also worked in musical theater for a time. Listening to Joel’s music made me feel closer to God, he made me think about the finer things in life through his music. Like having a close relationship with God and letting God know I am what he has made me to be. He made me think about my faith a lot more about how being a Christian isn’t all about showing up at church. Being a Christian is…

To know that he was capable of moving and getting through all the setbacks that arise makes me feel like I’m capable of enduring any challenges in life. For him to constantly get rejected even by his family shows how strong of an individual he is. It seem like he went through everything that you could go through to create a successful movement from the strikes to the grape boycott to the fast that he endured for 25 days. For someone with the health that he already have last 25 days without food really shows what someone is capable of doing when there mind is set on the goal. The film overall taught me a lot about the Mexican culture and the things that they went through throughout their history in California. I now have a different perspective on farm workers and what it takes to be able survive such horrific circumstances. The presentation made me feel as if I don’t know as much as I should know about history for every race and class throughout our history. This occurred not that long ago and is still an issue in the United States today. We see numerous people working for starvation wages that cannot improve the circumstance that their almost stuck in. It inspired make a change within the area that live and make sure everyone has their rights to the basic necessities of life. It also offended me that we as a nation could treat a group…

In order to increase self-awareness and personal protection within a prison environment there are several things one must keep in mind. The tools necessary to combat these individuals are not readily available nor made out of steel. You must use common sense and a keen eye being extra diligent about your surroundings at all times. Before deciding to subject yourself to this onslaught of negativity within the walls of a prison, you must understand not only the enemy but also yourself.…

Colin Powell life is interesting because he was the first African-American Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. The commencement speech Powell gives at Howard University show his willingness and determination to overcome challenges. Not letting his race put a limitations on what he could or couldn’t do, shows that anyone can do anything and be anyone in this nation. It also shows how times have changed from the past from African Americans being slaves to running president and doing great things. Powell speech showed me in an encouraging way that you don’t have to be big or popular to do great things.…

On November 13, 1993, Bill Clinton argues how Martin Luther King fought for the African-American community’s rights, but they are using it in the wrong way. Bill Clinton wanted all of the crime that was being committed to stop in the community of Memphis. Martin Luther King fought for their freedom, but not for the freedom to commit crime. Bill Clinton was trying to persuade the African-Americans to try and change the community for better, so the government’s changes can work for both the government and the community. For example, Bill Clinton implies, “We’re doing our best, but I do not believe we can repair the basic fabric of society until people who are willing to work have work.” He was showing how indignant…

When I was arrested, I was embarrassed and humiliated. During the hours I spent in jail I realized how easy it is to get in trouble and how hard it is to get out of it. I have never been arrested before and it was really an eye opening experience for me and for those who think it’s cool, it’s not; when those cuffs went on and I was place in the back of that police car all I could think of is the scene of being in jail from TV.…
