One of the main themes of the story is racism. During the 1960’s era there were a lot of racism issues in Australia. There was racism towards Aboriginal people and towards the Vietnamese people due to the Vietnam War. Jasper is actually a good person. He is: confident, clever, brave and mature. But the town fails to see this because of the racism towards him. They blamed him for all the wrong doings in town such as burning the post office which in fact he didn’t do. Jasper is despised by the community but when it comes to sport, he is like everyone’s hero. He is constantly being abused by the police, for example when Jasper was called in for an inquiry by the police about the disappearance of Eliza Wishart they let the shire president hit/bash him. The police are meant to protect the young and Jasper is only a fifteen year old boy.…

A good example is on page 12, Craig Silvey demonstrates how the Southern gothic genre by using this example ‘It is a girl… she is pale. In the silver light I can see she bears scratches down her arms and her calves and her face is smudged and bruised and bloody… she is still. She is limp… her head is to the side, like a piece of biblical art. She looks disappointed and sad. Surrendered… “Who is it” Jasper Jones takes some time to answer Laura Wishart. Its Laura.’ We can infer the text that despite witnessing what appears to be a brutal murder Charlie still has enough presence of mind to think and plan and not be overwhelmed by the tragic death ha has just witnessed. Bullying is a huge problem in schools, communities, and homes. Bullying doesn't just happen at a certain age, but it happens at any age. Bullying happens all over the world and is a huge problem that's happening around the world. After The Vietnam War the Australians hated the Vietnamese. " It took 521 Australian lives and left many soldiers with permanent disabilities" (the Vietnam war). The Australians lost the most people ever in this war. There are two distinctive voices, Claudia Valentine and Harry Lavender. Claudia valentine is shaped to be a strong character, who is not inhibited by traditions. Her independent nature and “hard bitten” experiences make her more observant and resourceful. However as we keep reading; we understand her insecurities and the subtle heart all women have. Harry Lavender the antagonist of this novel is a man of strong power who is metaphorically illustrated to be the heart, the veins, and the blood of Sydney. He is a man of corruption and crime, and a symbol of the calamitous facade of Sydney. Both voices are created by the world of Sydney or how the author has quoted “the sewage of Sydney”.…

Although most of the book was superb and understandable, I have question: Who set the fire on the Wishart’s house? At first I thought it was Eliza because she said that her dad would get what he deserved and she stood emotionless as her house burned down. But then you made me question myself when you started talking about Jasper and brought up that he had previously said, “you will know when I have left.” Did Jasper or Eliza set the fire? Or am I completely off track? Did neither of them do it? Did you mean for that to be confusing and make the audience think?…
