Jason And The Argonauts Comparison

Jason and the Argonauts is a myth brought to life in many renditions over the years. It is classically told by Apollonius in the Argonautica and retold as books and movies in the modern day such as the film Jason and the Argonauts.
The original myth as told by Apollonius bears some difference to the on screen adaptation as well as similarities. In the myth Medea is present with Jason and as they come upon the serpent and it is Medea who calms the beast to allow Jason to retrieve the Golden Fleece “her charged drug in its eyes, and their most potent odour enveloped it and laid it unconscious” (Apollonius, Argonautica lines 158-159). She prays to Sleep and uses salves to render the beast unable. Once the serpent is out of the way they take the Fleece and leave the grove as Jason urges Medea onward.
Hollywood takes the image of the serpent and creates a monster to resemble a hydra with many heads. The hydra is shown with a body who remains unnamed through the clip, which makes the threat of the serpent more real. In both cases Jason is successful in retrieving the Fleece for his journey to become rightful king, but different in the way that Medea is portrayed and how the Fleece is actually obtained. The stylistic change to have Medea become a lesser character in this scene is done so often and in a time where men and women are not always represented as equals this film choose to have Jason be a hero. To show Jason as the typical hero the film has Jason kill the monster. This choice also makes for an interesting fight scene in the film and could be another reason as to why they choose to change this part of the original
