Jane Fouty What Is In A Name
“What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.” - William Shakespeare. So what is in a name? Or more specifically your name? Do you know? The truth is many of us don’t, but why? There are so many interesting things to learn about your name. Where did it come from? What does it mean? I, Olivia Jane Fouty wasn’t even given a name until I was two days old. I’ll explain the choices in the next few paragraphs, along with some new things I learned. When I was first born my mother had no idea if I was going to be a girl or a boy. She had not had her heart set on a name either way before I was born. She chose Olivia for its meaning, Olive branch. She felt it meant strength and she really liked that. Olivia was first used in this spelling by William Shakespeare in his comedy Twelfth Night in 1602. It was possible that it was based off of Oliver or Oliva, a latin word for olive.
My middle name, Jane, was given to me because of family members that also had this middle name. Such as my grandma, great grandma, and older cousin. Jane is a fairly common middle name of english origin. It is said to mean “ God’s gracious gift”. Jane has also come to be used as a name for a female whose name you do not know. Someday’s I hate my name, others I love it. People often wish they could change their name, or what it would be like if they had been given another at birth. When it comes to that, I can’t help but to wonder if you would still be the same person had you gone by a different name. It is the smallest things that mold us as individual people, so why wouldn’t your name affect you in the same way. Therefore, when asked if I would change my name given the chance, I must say no. For seventeen years I have been me, Olivia Jane Fouty. Through all the ups and downs, and that's who I will always

weather was never over 85° and milk was more expensive then gas. My whole name is Helen Lonsdale Torrey but I always just liked Lonnie. My name is from a tradition in our family that has been in practice since the 1820s. The first daughter of the first daughter is named after the grandmothers middle name and that daughters middle name was the maiden name of the grandmother. Every generation the name Helen is exchanged for Hetty of the first born daughter. There is a silver cup with all of the names and dates of birth of those first born daughters; I am on that cup to be remembered forever.…

Bailee Grace Gunnell- If you were to ask me if I would ever change my name if I had the chance, I would say no. After we are born, we receive our own names. Names are chosen not by themselves, but by their family member’s. That is the first gift the baby owns and of course, it is free, but not everybody takes the free gift if they don't like it. Just like me and the girl I had read about in the article, “My Name," by Sandra Cisneros. We both don’t like our names because our names are not English names; indeed, it’s the different culture name.…

I am an abnormal person (most of the time in a good way.) My personality is eccentric, along with my hobbies and skills. Much of my life is aberrant from beginning to end. The only thing that is boring is my name, Taylor, which my parents happily gave me. Surprisingly enough, I was not named after anyone, which I find very uninteresting. Taylor was originally a surname meaning “tailor,” but someone in England was so unoriginal that they decided to name their child a surname. I was born in 2002, making me 13 years old. I was born and somewhat raised in Memphis, but I moved shortly thereafter to Bartlett.…

When I was handed this immense responsibility, I felt honored to choose the name this new person would have for the rest of their life. Even though, my parents had a few picked out, and I had to choose from those names, I had still considered it an honor. After having to make the tough decision, I had decided the perfect name for my brother would be Benjamin Adrian. At first, when I chose the name “Benjamin”, I wasn’t too sure about the name, but once he was born, I was sure that the name had been just right for him. When my parents had allowed me to pick out the name, I knew that Benji and I had created a bond that I knew would never be…
