Jan Vermeer's Work
He was born circa October 31, 1632, in Delft, Netherlands. His works have been a source of inspiration and fascination for centuries, but much of his life remains a mystery. His father, Reynier, came from a family of artisans in the town of Delft and his mother Digna had a Flemish background. In 1653, Jan Vermeer registered with the Delft Guild as a master painter. There is no record of whom he may have apprenticed under, or whether he studied locally or abroad. Many of Vermeer’s masterworks focus on domestic scenes, including “The Milkmaid”. This depiction of a woman in the midst of her work displays two of his trademarks: his realistic renderings of figures ad objects and his fascination with light. Many of his works have a luminous quality,

In the beginning of Blue Balliet’s Chasing Vermeer, Petra Andalee is a weird pear-shaped oddball, and Calder Pillay is also a peculiar person. Calder and Petra were both in Ms. Isabel Hussey’s homeroom 6th grade class. Ms. Hussey was a young, very joyful teacher who loved to study art. When the story first began, a mysterious thief had stolen the famous, and in my opinion beautiful painting “A Lady Writing.” Before the theft, Calder and Petra had many encounters and mysterious coincidences with the painting. For instance, Petra had a dream about the painting, although she claimed she had never seen the masterpiece. After the artwork was stolen Petra and Calder became a little closer. They already knew each other from school, but they…

In the book Vermeer’s Hat, Timothy Brooks will introduce to the reader seven paintings, along with plates. The paintings are from the Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer from Delft. The paintings and items within the art will to spin a web of history from around the world to the reader. The 17th century was different from other periods of time, because first contact with other nations has been made. The 17th century is about second contact with known nations. At this time in history taking over the world such as the conquests of Rome and the Christen crusades was not the main focus of the 17th century. The world has turned towards trade with other nations as a priority. Brook says, “I have chosen these paintings not just for what they show, but…

When measuring the extent to which Albert Speer had a positive impact on his time, it is essential to identify all the contributions made by Speer that had both a positive and negative effect on Germany and the broader global world. The positive contributions made by Speer include his work as the “First Architect of the Reich” — consisting of the Germania project and the Reich Chancellery; and as Armaments Minister which significantly strengthened the Nazi war effort. However, all this was negated by his involvement in Anti-Semitic activities, the use of forced labour and his knowledge of the concentration camps. By identifying both the positive and negative contributions, one can thoroughly deduce the magnitude of Speer’s positive impact on his time.…

Albrecht Dürer was born in the imperial free city of Nuremberg on May 27,1471, at a time when the city was shifting from its Gothic past to a more progressive form of Renaissance Humanism. Dürer's father, a goldsmith, departed Hungary to come to Nuremberg, where he met and married Albrecht's mother -- Barbara Hopkins. At age 13, Dürer accomplished an artistically precise and meticulous silverpoint, entitled "Self Portrait at age 13." This work of art not only reveals his premature aptitude as a youth, but the unique details of northern art. Albrecht Dürer was first apprenticed to his father at age 14, during which time he learned techniques in metal working. It would be these techniques and his own intrinsic talents that provide a stable base for his future engraving masterpieces.…

Vermeer’s The Geographer is successful in conveying the scientific attitude of the Dutch Golden Age. The painting portrays a middle-aged man, presumably a geographer, illuminated in light. His holding a compass in his left hand, as well as a block, holding down a piece of paper that is also bathed in light. Various geographic tools are present around the room to present the man’s craft. A patterned rug in the foreground, hanging over the table, has many organic lines to show the objects beneath it. A bureau with books and a globe on it, a patterned chair, and a nautical map of “All the Sea Coasts of Europe” line the background. The man has a slight smile, and is contemplating something as he looks out of a window. He has just thought of a good idea, as shown by the light, and is thinking about how to put the idea into action.…

Unlike Caravaggio, Vermeer tended to paint his works around his Dutch heritage. Many times this entailed paintings of women. Compared to Caravaggio, Vermeer’s painting took on a more laid back appeal. Some of these paintings include “Woman with a Pearl Necklace” and “Woman Holding a Balance.” Everyday life seemed to be what inspired many of Vermeer’s works. In Caravaggio’s paintings there is a lot of sadness and dark scenes dealing with religion. Vermeer’s paintings stayed more to the life he…

VLB was born on April 16th, 1755 in Paris. Her father was a pastel painter not very well recognized but greatly encouraged VLB’s interest and talent in painting. As a child, she was constantly drawing, so much so that she would get in trouble with the teachers for decorating her school work. At home, she had plenty of opportunity and support to experiment and create. She could draw alongside her father in his studio, and friends of her father would give her lessons in drawing, as well as invite her to be taught at the Academy of St. Luke. As she grew up and her art progressed, she gained the attention of some contemporary painters such as Joseph Vernet. Vernet advised the young artist not to follow any specific school of art, but to learn from the great Italian and Flemish masters—Ruben, Rembrandt, Greuze, and Van Dyck—and above all, nature.…

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot- Zundert, a village close to Breda in the province of North Brabant¬¬¬¬¬-a region in the south of the Netherlands, a predominantly Catholic area. He was the oldest child of Theodorus van Gogh, a minister of the Dutch reformed church, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. As a child, Vincent was serious, silent and thoughtful. He attended the Zundert Village School from 1860, where the single Catholic teacher taught around 200 pupils. From 1861, he and his sister Anna were taught at home by a governess(a private teacher), until 1 of October, 1864, when he went to Jan Provily’s Boarding School at Zevenbergen about 20 miles(32km.) away. He was distressed to leave his family home as he recalled later as an adult. On 15 of September 1866, he went to the new middle school, Willem II College in Tillburg. Constantijn Huysmans, a successful artist in Paris, taught van Gogh to draw at the school and advocate a systematic approach to the subject. Vincent’s interest in art began at an early age. He began to draw as a child and continued making drawings throughout the years leading to his decision to become an artist. Though well-done and expressive, his early drawings do not approach the intensity he develop in his later work. In March 1868, van Gogh abruptly left school and returned home.…

Bruegel‘s time was much different than life as we know it now. Pieter Bruegel was born around 1527, near Netherlands. He was most likely born in the town of Bruegel, Brabant (Gibson 13). Like many young boys during the Renaissance, Bruegel studied his father’s craft, which was art. Bruegel was most likely one of the more wealthy residents of Netherlands. This enabled him to attend school at a young age. Though most of Bruegel’s early life is unknown, we can infer how everyday life may have been during the Renaissance. Pieter Bruegel was taught more in depth about art shortly after his childhood.…
