As a child, James H. Clark was a troublemaker. His single mother supported him and his two siblings on only $225 per month. He was constantly getting into trouble with his teachers, and after his second suspension, he quit high school to join the navy at 16. He got his high school equivalency degree while with the navy, and started to get interested in engineering at the time. After leaving the navy, he enrolled at the University of New Orleans. He worked hard to graduate, eventually finishing his education at the University of Utah. Throughout college, he also worked to support a wife and two daughters. He got his Ph.D. in physics, and tried teaching at Stanford. He was an associate professor, and is now regarded as a Stanford
