The The son of a sharecropper and therefore the grandchild of slaves, James Cleveland Owens was born James Cleveland Owens on Sept twelve, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama. Owens was the youngest of 10 kids, 3 ladies and 7 boys, born to Henry Cleveland Owens (a sharecropper) and mother Emma Fitzgerald in Oakville, Alabama, on Sep twelve, 1913. J.C.,. once his new teacher asked his name (to enter in her roll book), he said "J.C.", however due to his sturdy Southern accent, she thought he same "Jesse". The name stuck, and he was referred to as jock for the remainder of his life. As a boy, Owens took totally different jobs in his spare time: he delivered groceries, loaded freight cars and worked in a very shoe shop whereas his father and older brother worked at a steel plant.Throughout this era, Owens accomplished that he had a passion for running. Throughout his life, Owens attributed the success of his athletic career to the encouragement of Charles poet, his junior high school track coach at Fairmount junior high school college.

He had to struggle to fit in, he had to prove to society that he belonged with those athletes all throughout high school and and into college. Living in that lifetime would’ve been hard for all non-white races. I think that if Jesse Owens wouldn't have been one of the students who didn't fight for that right to compete, then he wouldn't have set the stage for Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays later on the years.
