Espionage negatively effects national security and military operations. Doing so impacts the United States missions and jeopardizes many lives. The espionage act of 1917 was enacted to improve national security for the war effort of World War One. Sergeant First Class Clyde Lee Conrad conducted espionage against the United States and NATO allies. Within this paper you will learn how Conrad was able to go against the interests of the country he swore an oath to, and the under lying reasons. The Information leaked by Conrad was enormous and greatly impacted the security…
Sherlock Holmes has been called, “the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has ever seen.” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle shows us just how this reasoning “machine” operates in A Scandal in Bohemia. Showing how his canny wits, keen observation skills, and analytical reasoning affirm Sherlock to be a highly intelligent individual.…
Imagine you were a general in the civil war. You would never really be alone; you would always be watched. This is the role that spies had in the civil war. They played a major part in gathering information, and funding out battle plans and that is how sides got intel on the battle plans. Spies changed and turned the war because they played a big part in winning battles and gaining…
So here I am feeling rather shaken and stirred that Bond has quite literally made the double 0, managing to have scraped up a spot alongside the literary greats as number ninety-seven in Time Magazine’s ‘Top 100 Books Of All Time’. This may not come to a surprise to most of you, as the several books and films make it clear that the popular franchise is an icon in pop culture. But yet, I think we are forgetting that a classic should be more than just petty delight.…
In Priya Satia’s book Spies in Arabia: The Great War and the Cultural Foundations of Britain’s Covert Empire in the Middle East, Satia states without the advanced network fostered by Britain’s intelligence agency and the exploitation of the Bureaus in the Arab world World War I would not have been as successful and swift in defeating Axis powers. Another point Satia makes is that knowledge of a region and its history are what can make or break a mission, war, or other actions. She follows this up by saying, to spies perception is everything and good perception by the locals enabled them to collect more information.…
The narrative within Casino Royale centres around the theme of terrorism, and a contemporary audience would most certainly expect this to be addressed. At the time of its release, there was great public awareness and fear, following the infamous attacks…
Contrary to popular belief, the art of intelligence and counterintelligence is not really all that new to the United States, but goes all the way back to the days of The American Revolution. Had it not been for the bravery of men and women alike, and the utter will to be free from the British rule, our military leaders would not have been so well prepared to engage the enemy and win in decisive battles.…
This book is a spy story, about bluffs between the British Secret Service and the German Democratic Republic. I found it very difficult to understand. The stroy occurs during the Cold War, in the 1950s and 1960s.…
While Carter, L. David (2004) addresses the need for a clear distinction between law enforcement intelligence and national security intelligence, the line is not easily drawn in the present day threat environment. In the past year and a half alone there have been several high profile attacks on US soil such as the shootings at the Aurora, Colorado movie theater, Sandy Hook Elementary, and the Washington D.C. Naval Yard, to the Boston Marathon bombings to name a few. At each of these events a flurry of law enforcement intelligence and national security intelligence were attempting to figure out the motives behind the attack as soon as possible…
Intelligence operations have been used by the United States since the inception of this country. Every battle the U.S. fought used some form of intelligence. Covert Action (CA) was used in every battle, it was officially documented by an intelligence organization during World War II. This paper will address the question, does having the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as the responsible body for carrying out covert action create a conflict of interest when it is responsible for both covert/overt action for the purpose of collecting and feeding information for strategic analysis. Declassified reports and historical reference will be consulted to attest the success of co-locating the responsibility for both strategic analysis and covert…
Nevertheless, Warner suggests that an all-inclusive intelligence definition would have several components and describes these as first, being reliant on sub-rosa “sources”2 and procedures ensuring successful outcomes. Second, by having leaders direct the representatives of their nations to act on behalf of their nation’s interests. Third, intelligence directs its attention towards other countries and their “subjects, corporations, or groups.”3 Four, intelligence…
Accuracy is a critical component of evaluating intelligence. Since its inception in the 1950’s, there have been about fifteen hundred National intelligence estimates. The estimative nature of NIE’s makes it almost impossible to measure it accuracy and the Intelligence Council has never established a system for evaluating the estimative accuracy. NIE’s are essentially judged in two ways, if the NIE is proven correct then the NIE is good; if incorrect then the NIE is bad. Checking the validity of NIE’s can be difficult due to the fact that some judgments or key findings cannot be checked. The production of NIE requires distinguishing between estimative Intel and factual Intel that in turn will allow the report to be more concise. In producing…
In recent years, there has been much debate in the intelligence community relating to the balance between human intelligence and technical intelligence in order to satisfy states’ intelligence requirements. This paper addresses the argument from both sides, and suggests that there has been an over reliance on technical intelligence in recent years, leading to inadequacies in intelligence gathering.…
Critical thinking is vastly important to the success of the intelligence communities in that the ability to think critically and to think ‘outside of the box’ allows intelligence analysts to pursue leads they may have previously…
