With over one hundred rivers and its tallest mountain peak over 7,000 feet, Jamaica is just off the coast of Florida. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, just right behind Cuba and Hispaniola. The longest river in Jamaica is Rio Minho. The widest river is the Black River (Worldatlas). In 2009, Jamaica’s population was approximately 2.8 million citizens (Glennie Chappell). First and foremost, the majestic limestone plateau covers almost two thirds of the island. Stretching for miles, covered by smaller islands and white-sanded beaches, this is an unique island. Filled with endless hills, the Cockpit Country is a harsh, dramatic landscape just west of the mountains. (Worldatlas). Jamaica is very close to the equator meaning, the climate is tropical rainforest.
The Spanish settled in Jamaica during the 16th century and brought over African slaves. The British fought the Spanish and set the slaves free. The British were unable to control the slaves and most of the maroons/slaves, set off into the mountains and started their own community. Jamaica hasn’t had many conflicts but, during the two World Wars, the United States and the United Kingdom needed workers and recruited workers from Jamaica (Glennie, Alex and Laura Chappell). The Governor of Jamaica is Dr. Patrick L. Allen and they also have a queen named Elizabeth II (Michigan State University). No doubt that, Jamaica’s culture is fascinating.
