In Jamaica for the past 25 years there has been a step up in people with diet related disorders. The greasy foods that the Jamaicans have incorporated with their lifestyle diets have led to illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity among there population. The impact/effects of obesity on the individual can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems (osteoarthritis), respiratory problems and cancer. As well as harmful effects on the individual, obesity places a financial burden on the community as a whole. There is a huge cost to the community from obesity such as the cost of lost days at work, higher employer insurance payments, lower wages and incomes linked to obesity-related illnesses.

To prevent obesity from increasing people need to change their daily diet to a healthier diet which would contain a wide variety of foods and includes proteins, carbohydrates and fats as well as vitamins and minerals.
To prevent obesity from occurring follow these steps to having a healthier life:
--Eat five to six servings of fruit and vegetables a day. A vegetable serving consists of one cup of raw vegetables or one-half cup of cooked vegetables. A fruit serving is one piece of small fresh fruit, one-half cup of canned or fresh fruit or fruit juice, or one-fourth cup of dried fruit.
--Choose whole grain foods such as brown rice and whole wheat bread. Avoid highly processed foods made with refined white sugar, flour and saturated fat.
--Weigh and measure food to gain an understanding of portion sizes. For example, a three-ounce serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards. Avoid super-sized foods particularly at fast-food restaurants. You can achieve a lot just with proper choices in serving sizes.
