Jack Ma, An Internet God Father
When it comes to China-based e-commerce, when we refer to the online-shopping, we have to mention the person, Jack Ma, China’s internet godfather. Jack Ma was born in the city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He was regarded as a silly guy in his childhood, and his mind became blank when he confronted three questions at the same time. He was bad at math but good at English, interestingly; his favor for English was because his father felt helpless when he responsed in English to his father’s yelling. Since 13 years old, He worked for free as a guide for foreign tourists to improve his language, which opened a door for him to the outside world. Jack Ma’s schooling is not so good; he has never been to a first-class school. After failing the nationwide college entrance exam twice, in 1984, he narrowly squeezed into Hangzhou Normal College to study English. After graduation, he became a teacher. In 1991, Jack Ma set up Hope Translation Agency with his friends. In order to support the agency, Ma dragged a big bag selling small toiletries alone everyday. Two years later, he organized the first English corner and made the Hope Translation Agency the largest one in Hangzhou and he become one of the most popular teacher in his academy. In 1995, he became one of the “Top 10 Outstanding Teachers in Hangzhou”. But this time he gave up his job and decided to build an internet business. In 1995, Ma founded the China Yellow Pages, an online directory for Chinese businesses, widely believed to be China’s first Internet-based company. In 1999,he was invited to a e-commerce convention, at that time, he decided to create Asia’s own unique mode—not business to business, but business to businessman. In the same year, he founded Alibaba.com as an internet start-up that focused on small businesses rather than consumers or multinationals.
