Italy: My New Life
The first time I finally felt free was when I took that first step out of the airport and on to the sidewalk of Rome. I smelt all the flavors of Gelato as I walked down the streets and finally when I couldn’t resist any longer I went into a little shop and I bought a small cup of mint chip gelato. I got into a gondola and rode to my new apartment. As I was moving into my new space, I met Julia. She was an Italian artist in the apartment across the hallway. Instantly we connected and we became best friends. One day I was walking in the Trevi district, and I was about to throw a dime into the Trevi Fountain when I tripped. Fortunately, a local caught me. He took me to a local bakery, where we shared a cannoli and a chocolate croissant. Before I had to leave to go start my new job as a barista at the coffee shop, my job before I got my real job, Alex asked me out on a real date. A week later, we met back up at the fountain, and we took a water taxi to La Terrazza dell’Eden, where I tasted the most magnificent food that had ever been placed onto my tongue. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, the atmosphere was romantic, and the view over Rome was spectacular. After dinner, we ended the night listening to the band at Gregory’s Jazz Club. The next day I was explaining the whole date to Julia, while strolling through Piazza di Sagna. I could see that she was getting bored, so I asked her why she never went out. She explained to me that when she was 19 she got married, and then a year later he died. And that she has been on a few dates since then, but no one seemed quite right for her. As weeks turned into months, I grew closer to Alex and to Julia. I got a job as a secretary for a family law firm. Due to a law suit, Alex had to go to France and asked me to go with him, so I asked Julia to watch my house and my new Maltese, Kiki. When I told Alex I was ready to go, I told him Julia was going to watch Kiki and my house; he freaked out. He told me, “I

Italy, unlike all other countries, was the focal point during the Renaissance era, a time for rebith or Greek and Roman ideas. For so many reasons, Italy thrived during this period. The most obvious reason being, Italy was geographically in the center of the world. Then, there was the influence the church held over the people. Lastly, there was the political standing of those ruling Rome. These along with so many other ideas created a booming Renaissance eon.…

Geographically, Italy is comprised of a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, as well as two large islands. The shape of Italy has been depicted as a ‘boot’ in many cartoons and drawings for years. The country covers over 116,000 square miles, making it approximately the combined size of Florida and Georgia. (Killinger, 2002) Italy is a democratic republic that has a current population of around 60 million people, making it the twenty-third most populous country in the world. Italy is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the ‘Group of Six’, which later became the G8, and the European Union. ("Italy," 2010) Italians are primarily Roman Catholic and are required to have fourteen years of formal education. This has lead to a 98 percent literacy rate among the population that only has a growth rate of 0.02 percent per year, which is one of the lowest growth rates in the world. (Killinger, 2002)…

Our blind date was late for 45 minutes; I started to get angry and annoyed, so I said ‘’ I knew it; this is why I hate online dating. I am leaving this stupidity.” In the same instant, she walked in, and the time stopped. It was the girl of my dreams, with big hazel eyes piercing through my soul. With her glowing skin, modest elegance and discrete makeup, she had style and glamour of classic Hollywood beauty. Simple five word ‘’ Hi, my name is Johana” made me feel as I know her for decades. In contradiction, Sergio and her sister Andrea left us almost immediately, as they didn’t have any mutual connection. The hours slipped by like seconds; we kept talking about countless subjects, oblivious of our surroundings; it turned out that we are like long lost twins reunited again. As we liked the same book (“The Forth Agreement”), food, sports, and even held the identical views on morality and…

I went to my room and packed all of my belongings into two massive suitcases and loaded them into my old Holden Astra. I took some money from my mother's stash, neatly tucked away, out of sight under the bottom drawer of her bedside table, and then left for the next town over. I found a cheap motel where I stayed a few weeks, trying to find someone that would hire a 17 year old girl that dropped out of year 11. I got a job working at some fast food place that I hadn’t heard of before, and I still can’t remember what it was called.…

Life in Italy in the 1930’s caused difficulty to some Italians during that time period. During the 1930’s a large number of Italians who had opposed the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini arrived in the United States. After the news spread in Italy about the bombing of Pearl Harbour almost all Italians supported the war against Benito Mussolini. At this point, Italy was slowly becoming under the Nazi rule, the significance of a woman’s role in Italy was emphasised as they were expected to accept the fascist ideology. Girls were expected to get married and conceive lots of children. Many young women in Italy felt the pressures of politics that were dominated by men and felt that women’s rights were disappearing as they were expected to carry out these tasks. Before the 1930’s, Mussolini launched his battle of births in 1927 which was a campaign that encouraged the people of Italy to increase their family sizes.…

It all began with a simple phone call one chilly, rainy Monday night after dinner. “Joe,” my mother hollered up the stairs, “it is Jackie.” As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was quite excited. Although I tired, I was looking forward to spending some time with Jackie, my long time friend. As I skipped steps running down the stairs I thought of all the things we would do tonight, bowling, go out to eat, watch a movie, so many things to choose from. But tonight was Jackie’s turn to decide what to do as I got to choose last time we hung out.…

Today was a ruff day for me and Elizia! Before I met up with her I had to take care of Elly. I felt as tired as a marathon runner. These days were hard because the fever was still going on and there was no food left. But the worse thing was that I couldn’t find mama. It killed me inside to think that she was dead. Anyways Elizia and I had been taking care of a lot of people lately. It was insane to see how many people were affected by this disease. This fever was an intruder coming into the city! Though when Eliza and I were taking caring of people we stumbled upon 2 twin boys that seemed like they needed most of the care. So we took them with us and bring them back to the old coffee shop. Elizia and I had to recover the shop, from when we fled it because…

For this week’s discussion post I chose to read Edith Wharton's "Roman Fever”. The story takes place in Rome, specifically at a restaurant overlooking the Palatine (one of the seven hills on which the oldest part of Rome was built) where two middle aged American women Mrs. Ansley (a well-cared for and still stunningly attractive woman), and Mrs. Slade (a high colored fairly attractive woman) overhear two younger women on the street below carrying on about how they were going out to have fun with friends for the night instead of spending the evening with their much less exciting mothers. As we continue to read we learn the two women have been lifelong friends and just happened to have run into one another while vacationing in Rome and that the…

It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. Danny and I got along well our whole lives, but we weren’t as close as some other siblings. This upset me because sometimes all I wanted to do was talk to my brother and get his advice. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…

It was the summer in 2006, it was hot and the air was dry, my two children and I had just finished moving to our new apartment in Ventana Ranch we were all exhausted and relieved to be finished. Moving wasn’t something they had ever did before we had lived in Bernalillo their entire little lives, but I was ready for change, a new beginning, I wanted to get out of the town I grew up in and I had finally done that. My daughter, Niya was five years old, my son, Santiago was ten. They were excited they didn’t have to share a room any longer this apartment was bigger than what we had before. School had just finished for Santiago and it was summer break. He wasn’t too happy about leaving his friends behind, neither was Niya.
