THE NATURE OF HOSPITALITY SECTOR AND WHAT IMPACT IT HAS ON THE GLOBAL CULTURE
Introduction
Hospitality is considered as a major industry contributing economically in most of the countries around the globe and it is growing rapidly these days. Hospitality is often related to places that cater services to people, such as hotels, restaurants and so on. The early view of hospitality defined as ‘the art or practice being hospitable; the reception or entertainment of guests, visitors or strangers, with liberality and good will’ based on Oxford English Dictionary. In other word, hospitality can be defined as a actions or services that makes people feel warmly welcomed. Hospitality is also defined from the word “hospice”, which actually from the Latin word “hospitium”. “Hospice” is meant “house of rest” (Powers, 1992).
History of hospitality during ancient Greek is strangers received a care and protection during their stay under the eye of Zeus Xenios, hospitality is strongly related to the religion. During ancient Rome, Roman business man start to traveled and at that moment, travel are known for others. As the travel become more popular, they start to provide food and shelter during the middle ages.
Hospitality sector is the sub-divisions of hospitality industry. Hospitality industry is made up of those business that offer one or more of the following; accommodation, preparation of food and beverage service or entertainment. Hospitality industry involve variety of sector, which provide services and facilities and also job scope is various department.
In the study of hospitality, pineapple is presented as the universal symbol which signifies welcome.
There are four main sector of hospitality under hospitality industry, foodservice, lodging, recreational and also travel and tourism. ( Walker, 2004)
