Isolation In Good Country People
The collection of short stories and the depiction of characters in them affects our understanding of humanity, isolation, and betrayal through their actions, ideas, and personalities. Isolation can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the situation. For example, if a person isolates themselves from others when they’re upset may temporarily calm them down and help them to gather their thoughts, however it is good to have someone else to talk to instead of trying to deal with a problem all by themselves. Too much isolation can cause you to misread people’s true characteristics resulting in someone getting hurt. In the short story “Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor people who choose to isolate themselves from society are blinded

According to Edgar Alan Poe, a short story should be like a window into someone else’s life, in other words it doesn’t really matter what happened before and it doesn’t matter what’s going to happen after. The authors of the short stories I have read in class this year, using only that window, have made me feel sorry for the characters and angry towards the resentment the rest of the community shows them because they are different from others. Reading White & witchetty, the Dolls House and Josie has made me question my own values and beliefs.…

Arthurs isolation is physically and emotionally described, for instance "and he left me alone" he feels like an outsider because the village is out of his norm and he feels as if the villagers are oblivious so they speak nonsense. He has a major ego because of the fact he's from London and the rest live in an isolated town called Crythin Gifford. When he notices The Woman In Black "and caught a glimpse of another mourner" this suggests he's isolated and Mr Jerome says "a young woman?" Mr Jerome didn't see anyone or anything, Arthurs the only one who saw her so he's stuck in a situation his carefree mind doesn't overlook. "Instead of replying to my question at all, he turned right away from me" he's physically isolated here because the villagers are clearly hinting that its a sensative subject however Arthur doesn't pick up on the hints. Arthurs question doesn't get answered which clearly suggests everyone is hiding something leaving Arthur isolated. On the causeway to Eel Marsh house keckwish is silent "the speechless Keckwick" this suggests Keckwick is silent because he knows they're not going to a joyful place, it's more doom and gloom. Also, talking in this situation would also be inappropirate. To Arthurs dismay, he doesnt know whats going on, so he stays silent and doesnt try to make any conversation which isolates him again.…

The Tim Winton story ‘Aquifer,’ shows that alienation can be destructive and even deadly. The main character is bullied, and in fact physically abused by the other children forcing him to be alone and feel different. When one of his bullies drowns in the lake, it is his alienation and his internal feeling of being so disconnected that prevents him from speaking up. “I went home and said nothing.” This is a tremendous understatement. The general mood is quite dark and it presents the idea that this has followed him into…

An example in Of Mice and Men is “A guy needs somebody… A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is… a guy gets too lonely… he gets sick” (Steinbeck, (Crooks) 72-73). This just shows that a solitary person will do anything in order for them to be able to socialize with someone. Crooks is probably the best example of the theme “loneliness”. Since Of Mice and Men is predicated on the Great Depression, people conspicuously had slaves. Crooks was a slave and is a great example because slaves never had any friends because no one would interact with an African American. Isolation is virtually disease-like. It infects a person and can make them seem introverted when in truth, all they really want is a…

Religion is a major foundation for many cultures. It is present all over the world in many different shapes and forms. But all religions have one thing in common, communality. Naturally, with rituals such as congregation people of religion are brought together. This community worships together, but this relationship extends further than the confines of a church. Members of the same church, or religion, have the same core values, and these commonalities result in a community that would not have otherwise existed. When there is a disregard for religion, there is a loss of community and thus a step towards isolation. This is best seen through the comparison of The Stranger, by Albert Camus, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In The Stranger, the main character exhibits an immense disregard for religion; coincidentally this person is very much alone in the novel. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the main character is an avid follower of his religion; and such, he is a member of the community and has many relationships with other members of the community.…

Isolation. The terrifying thought of my parents splitting. Postponing my love, for their annihilating decision. It left the remains of my interests woeful. No one is willing enough to exist with the involvement with my irrational family. Nippy, the harsh winter's breeze is impaling my firm pores of my hands. I clasped the maturing seat underneath me, while wrapping my thumbs around my oversized sleeves, as I pondered the discomforts of nature and my family. Harsh, the glistening sun reflects off the vast ocean. It shines whilst penetrating pain through my brown irises and into my aching heart, as if it weren't aching already.…

Have you ever felt so distant, so isolated from everything and everyone around you? Isolation can be both physical and emotional. Physical isolation can be defined as antisocial or not socially contacting with people. Emotional isolation comes from the inside of a person. They could have issues going on with themselves or in their lives and they feel as if there is no one to turn to, so they choose to keep to themselves.
