Isolation In Chinese Cinderella
Chinese Cinderella is the story of Adeline Yen Mah’s youth as an unwanted daughter. Adeline lived long after the Opium War, however, the concession cities of Tianjin, Shanghai, and Hong Kong became the home of Adeline’s family. Adeline was isolated by Niang, her stepmother having a negative effect on her well-being pet PLT’s death. Conversely, she was shown justice by a stranger in her Aunt Reine.
A cruelness towards Adeline was administered by her stepmother, the evil and arrogant Niang. The feeling of undesired and abuse from Niang made her feel unwanted. The loneliness and unwanted feeling caused Adeline to feel isolated when PLT died. PLT, who was the only thing close to her beside Aunt Baba, died harmlessly and helplessly on that day. Adeline said praisingly that ‘when tomorrow comes , will PLT be alright?. This relates to how Adeline feels isolated have no one by her side.
Aunt Reine, Adeline’s beloved aunt, gave her validity to live, be part of the family, be accepted. The kindness and loving actions that Aunt Reine is a sign of validity. Aunt Reine who didn’t judge her like Niang did but she accepted her. When Adeline was traveling with the Schilling family to go to Hong Kong, Aunt Reine showed, the justice shared between them. stated out clearly “...now, now! Remember what I told you first day with us. It's share and share alike in our family . Nobody is going to be left treated differently.” from here Adeline experiences the justice she hadn’t before.
Overall I strongly believe that Adeline was isolated and affect by her, stepmother Niang and her siblings . They rejected her because when she born was her mother died and her big sister considered her ‘bad luck’ but she wanted to show that she wasn’t.
