Isabel Allende's And Of Clay Are We Created
Often we come across the saying, "People who hide their feelings usually care the most." In Isabel Allende's And Of Clay Are We Created, the author writes about the main character, Rolf Carlé who shows a sense of determination with his selfless concern for the well being of others, but also has a hidden dark past that he doesn't often express. This short story is based upon a volcano eruption in Colombia where more than 23,000 people were killed, during this time, the vast majority of the media was focused on a thirteen year old girl trapped in the mud. Through this account, the author introduces the reader to Rolf Carlé who shows his complexity by being determined and afflicted while also representing larger themes of the short story such …show more content…
This allows the character to represent as someone who often deals with inner pain while putting on a front as a shell to hide what he truly feels. "He understood then that all his exploits as a reporter, the feats that had won him such recognition and fame, were merely an attempt to keep his most ancient fears at bay, a stratagem for taking refuge behind a lens to test whether reality was more tolerable from that perspective." (Allende 5) The author used Rolf's inner thoughts to exhibit how he covers up what he feels and hides behind the idea of reality rather than pure perspective. While having time to himself, Rolf begins to reflect on his past, "That night, imperceptibly, the unyielding floodgates that had contained Rolf Carlé's past for so many years began to open, and the torrent of all that had lain hidden in the deepest and most secret layers of memory poured out, leveling before it the obstacles that had blocked his consciousness for so long." (Allende 4) Through Rolf's inner thoughts the readers begin to illustrate the main characters feeling of despair which shows how he leaves his emotions locked up rather than facing them, and after awhile begins to let his emotions build up until he hits rock bottom. This allows us, as readers to understand

Out of the three poems, the first two hardly had but one or two symbols throughout. They were so short, that they hardly had enough time to get but a small message across to the reader, or atleast that 's how I saw it. However, Alberto Rios 's "Mi Abuelo" had many images which made my brain tingle with excitement for writing this paper. Besides the fact that it had the most imagery, it also was the most interesting and best imagery in my opinion.…

In the poem, “America” by Maya Angelou, she suggests that America is unethical. Through the use of figurative language Maya Angelou paints a picture of unjust actions by America. In the poem, Angelou mentions the “hungry” which refers to the people of America, and “her” refers to America itself. For instance, Angelou says “Her crops of abundance/The fruit and the grain/Have not fed the hungry/Nor eased the great pain.” (3,4) This shows that even though America has many resources specifically goods, there are still many people that are dying of hunger and have great agony as a result. To conclude, it is clear and perceptible that Maya Angelou knows much of America's’ truths and she wants us to know that even after all the plenty of nourishment…

In “One Writers Beginning” Eudora Welty’s Speaks of “The Voice”. She describes this as human and inward. The voice is not hers but “the voice” of the reading; a cadence if you will. We will explore how Welty’s voice that runs like a pulse through her will lead to what she describes as the “The stamps” of her life. Welty’s stamps will form her deepest learning experiences and dance nicely next to her imagination from early childhood and into her adultlife. We will ponder and think about how and what pulse, stamps and ‘the voice” means to Welty’s and attempt to incorporate them into our interpretations drawing from both hers and our personal experiences.…

Individuals rely on fictional tales in order to access a deeper understanding of reality. However, since reality is too complex to explain in pragmatic terms, authors are sometimes forced to turn to other means of explanation. The House of the Spirits, by Isabel Allende, incorporates magical elements in a familiar atmosphere in order to explain one’s relationship with the world. Overall, through Clara’s magical abilities which show her inexorable love for her family, Allende demonstrates how a woman’s relationship with her loved ones changes the course of their lives.…

Next, Bystanders not only show a lack of compassion, but likewise/similarly, they show cruelty towards others who are in grave danger. In the short story, “And of Clay We Are Created”, by “Isabell Allende”, she shows a visible image in the reader’s head with her story by putting in page (22)“ He went to the Army field tents to offer relief in the form of vague promises to crowds of the rescued, then to the improvised hospital to offer a word of encouragement to doctors and nurses worn down from so many hours of tribulations. Then he asked to be taken to see Azucena, the little girl the whole world had seen. He waved to her with a limp statesman's hand, and microphones recorded his emotional voice and paternal tone as he told her that her courage had served as an example to the nation. Rolf Carle interrupted to ask for a pump, and the President assured him that he personally would attend to the matter.…

"Land is not merely soil, it is a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of soils, plants, and animals." This quote by Aldo Leopold helps detail the theme behind the short story "Chee's Daughter" written by Juanita Platero and Siyowin Miller. In the story, Chee loses his daughter because of his wife's family traditions. He confronts his in-laws and is able to make a barter with them for his daughter. He exchanged large amounts of food which he grew on his own land for Little One. This barter helped expressed the theme; if a man takes care of his land, the land will never fail him.…

Human beings have infinite possibilities and are constantly progressing forward, yet a man’s true nature only shows through in the most desperate of times. Only when everything is on the line does the truth shine through like a pearl in the middle of a clam. The truth that is shown is that human beings are resilient. People are willing to do anything to make sure that they and the others around them live and move forward toward a future. They might accept death, so that others can live on like in “A letter to Sarah Ballou,” or they might simply write about the truth so that others will know the truth like the poem “War is kind.” Moreover they might attempt to blow up a bridge like in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” and end up paying the consequences. On the other hand they might run away from the evil of humanity and hide to keep everyone around them free and safe like in “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.” Whatever it is, the people of this are resilient to the very end.…

However, it can also be argued that both the female voice in The Yellow Wallpaper or the Still I Rise collection cannot be admired by the reader. In the poem ´Phenomenal Woman´, Angelou exposes the attributes that the titular woman possesses that deem her irresistible to others, particularly to those of the opposite sex, although she does not conform to societies definition of ´beautiful´. Although Maya Angelou´s is regarded as an advocate for both racial and gender equality, it can be argued that Phenomenal Woman generates an undertone of arrogance and female superiority. ´And to a man, The fellows stand or, Fall down on their knees.´ is a physical representation of female superiority in which men are subservient. Supporting the notion of female supremacy is the use of the metaphor ´Then they swarm around me.…

As the story opens, already the reader is confronted with the topic of concealing the truth. The narrator speaks to a woman who discusses her abnormal childhood. The woman claims formal speech was not possible in her household due to her father’s profession and also due to the time of war. Griffin writes, “There were nuclear missiles standing just blocks from where she lived. But her father never spoke about them. Only after many years away from home did she learn what those weapons were.” (Griffin, 299). This family’s secrets affected this girl’s childhood dramatically to the point where normal, casual conversation was unusual for her as an adult. As a result of this, the family ended up keeping secrets from themselves about who they truly were. A close family relationship could not have been possible under those conditions.…
