IS THERE A FUTURE FOR FREELANCE WAR
REPORTERS IN SPAIN?
CARMEN VALENCIA LÓPEZ
Birmingham City University, UK

ABSTRACT This study aims to shed light on journalism labour and especially on freelancers working as war reporters in Spain. The study takes as its starting point three reports that represent the main factors (war reporting, freelance, journalism context) and the analysis of their content leads us to assert that the future of journalism as a profession is going to self-employed media professionals, which includes war reporters, who work as autonomous, dissociated from specific newspapers, but very linked to what it is known as embedded journalism. In general, it is a breath of fresh air to the profession that is living the most critical crisis within media sector.

In the article, “Online freedom will depend on deep forms of web literacy” the author Navneet Alang reveals the importance of “teaching kids language and rhetoric, so that one day they might pick apart politician’s speeches or learn to recognize a scam.” Adults even now in our time and age struggle to do such a thing. This is why we must first attempt to understand, then pass our knowledge along to our children, in hopes that they continue passing down the awareness. He starts his article with a personal uncontrollable example that he faced; Google redesigning Google Reader. He reveals how stranded he felt “in this newly alien environment that used to seem like home.” This situation is an example of how powerless we are when wanting to match…

Throughout life, people are always seeking something, whether it is discovering solutions to satisfy desires or seeking the purpose of life. However, the recognition and fulfillment of one's true self-are the hardest things in the world simply because one always seems certain of him or herself, and is strongly influenced by his or her surroundings. In his essay, “The Power of Context,” Malcolm Gladwell says that human behavior is susceptible to and strongly predisposed by the environment in which they live. He further poses that, "epidemics are sensitive to the surroundings and situation of the places and times in which they transpire." The essay extensively states that the features of one’s current social and physical…

The times we live in now are not only impressive as we view the various fields of accomplishments we, as people, have made together and looking at the progressive efforts created and made possible through the rigorous movements of others, they are also becoming quite foreboding in a sense as we can’t help but understand that though notable the forward movement may be we cannot ignore the frightening interactions that have come of late recently which may very well contrast whatever reformist future we had the potential to obtain.…
