Is there pride in serving in our military?
What is your definition of pride? Webster’s dictionary defines pride as satisfaction in something done or owned. Pride can be defined as several things, such as having high self-esteem or just being an all around self loving person. I know when most individuals think of the definition of pride they think of someone who is arrogant, has a very high opinion of themselves and always has the thought of being superior to others whether it because of their intelligence or their physical appearance. But pride is not always defined as being self centered. When it comes to the U.S. Military, i define pride as being proud of something one does or accomplishes every day, or one who finds pride in their country.

There is a man, he did not serve in the military long. But he learned a lot in his 8 years of serving. He served when there was really no war for America to fight in, so he was never deployed, but he still learned a lot about how the military works. This man that I am speaking of is my father. And yes, i asked him the exact question that I am answering for you today. “Is there pride in serving in our military?” He did not understand what i was asking at first. But then I explained to him that the question is basically asking, should and American be proud to serve in the U.S. Military, after i asked him he thought for second. Then looked at me and said “absolutely yes.”

I fully agree with my father. Now the question is why? Why did i decide to agree? Well, I agree because if someone is serving in the U.S. Military they fight everyday for the largest free country in the world. I find that as something to be very proud of, because they are willing to fight for the country they love. They are willing to risk their lives for their friends, their neighbors, their family and the men and women whom they have never met who live in the United States of America.

These men and women serving are so selfless that they are willing to go to an unfamiliar

In the text, ”Why They Serve” by Sarah Palin she discusses why her own son Track enlisted in the military and deployment in Iraq. In her opinion the men and women who serve in the US Army and especially those who are deployed overseas serve with an outstanding sense of duty and patriotism. She wrote the text when she was governor of Alaska and with a possibility of becoming vice-president. She speaks about how she admires the young soldiers who have possibly never known the absence of freedom and have been privileged with homes, education and opportunities in life. They grew up knowing the freedom and the security that comes with being an American and living in a democratic society. As she says, “They could be off…

Sometimes I wonder why someone will enlist to go to war and sacrifice his/her life for millions of people which they will never be going to meet or know his/her story. I know that these soldiers will have the hope that nothing wrong will happen on combat, and that on their return to this country, our society will repay them in a great way for the sacrifice to fight for our freedom, but little that we know, that most of the time is the opposite, we as a nation have turned our backs to all these brave people who not only gave their time and courage but a lot them pay with their life for a war in Vietnam that many still question up to this day.…

You know, a while back, I met a young man named Shamus in a VFW {Veterans of Foreign Wars} Hall in East Moline, Illinois. He was a good-looking kid, six-two, six-three, clear eyed, with an easy smile. He told me he'd joined the Marines, and was heading to Iraq the following week. And as I listened to him explain why he'd enlisted, the absolute faith he had in our country and its leaders, his devotion to duty and service, I thought this young man was all that any of us might hope for in a child. But then I asked myself: Are we serving Shamus as well as he is serving us?…

We fight because we believe. Not that war is good, but that sometimes it is necessary. Our soldiers fight and die not for the glory of war, but for the prize of freedom and the ideologies that our country stands for. So great, were these ideologies, that men and women have bravely fought to defend them. OUR COUNTRY HAS FACED MANY TESTS OF COURAGE since its birth. Our answer to tests can be found in cemeteries from the islands of the Pacific to the coast of northern France. You can visit the hills in Arlington National Cemetery where markers record the names of more than 280,000 men and women. Each one was once or still is the most important person in someone's life. WITH EACH LOSS IN WAR, the world is changed forever for the family and friends left behind. IT IS UP TO US TO GIVE MEANING FOR THEIR SACRIFICE and de devoted to those principles for which these heroic citizens gave their lives. There is NO GREATER LOVE than to give your life for another. Today, our young men and women are volunteers who serve at their own risk and it’s often their sacrifices that should be honored, because they choose to be in harms way, for all of us. The ultimate sacrifice is when they are leaving grieving family members, a child, and a wife (husband) behind; worrying if they will come back home. For example, Bill Cosby (William Henry Cosby [1956 hospital corpsman]), Montal William (1974 U.S Marines), Tony Bennett (World War 2, army), and Jonny Carson(World War 2,V-5 program) are few men who has dedicated their lives to this nation and who has fought for what they thought was right.…
