Is Montresor A Good Planner

Montresor’s Revenge Throughout history man has struggled with revenge and pride. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”. Montresor has been insulted my Fortunato. Montresor tricks Fortunato into following him into the catacombs. Once they are down there montresor chains Fortunato to a wall of granite and buries him alive. Montresor accomplishes murder because he is a good planner, heartless, and a good talker.
Due to the fact that Montresor is a good planner he is able to make all the preparations needed so he can murder Fortunato. Before planning to kill Fortunato, Montresor makes sure everything is ready which shows he is a good planner. “I busied myself among the pile of bones. Throwing them aside I soon uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar” ( p.3, li 170-171). The analysis of Montresor’s actions show that he is a good planner. It is clear from this situation that Montresor is a good planner.
The fact that Montresor chains Fortunato to a wall reveals to the reader that he is heartless. “ I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet. Throwing the links around his wrist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it” ( p.3, li 156-160). This indicates that Montresor is heartless. Thus Montresor’s actions reveal that Montresor is heartless.
Based on their conversation we can see Montresor is a good talker which could make him a potential dangerous enemy. Due to the fact that Montresor persuades his friend to come try some wine in the catacombs we can see he is a good talker. “As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchesi. If anyone has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell
