Is Homosexuality A Choice or Are People Born Gay

By Santo53 Nov 13, 2013 936 Words

Is homosexuality a life style choice or is homosexuality created thru our genetic makeup during conception? Scientist, Christian’s and Homosexuals have debated this issue for centuries. Many “Gays” believe that prejudice ideas have been created from differences of opinion on what is the norm or abnormal to sexual practices behind closed bedroom doors. Labels of “Straight or Gay” have been given on the basis of these sexual acts. Have we become a society of judgmental majorities who ignore facts over popular beliefs handed down from our ancestral tree? Homosexuality has been practiced for thousands of years according to history.  Simply put, homosexuality is defined as sexual relations between like genders (i.e., two males or two females).  It was Sigmund Freud who first postulated that parental relationships with a child ultimately determine the youngster’s sexual orientation.  But this “nurturing” aspect has effectively given way to the “nature” side of the equation.  Can some behaviors (e.g., alcoholism, homosexuality, schizophrenia) be explained by genetics?  Are these and other behaviors influenced by nature or by nurture?  Are they inborn or learned?  Some individuals believed that the answer would be found hiding amidst the chromosomes analyzed in the Human Genome Project. The human X and Y chromosomes (the two “sex” chromosomes) have been completely sequenced by scientist.  Thanks to work carried out by labs all across the globe, we know that the X chromosome contains 153 million base pairs, and harbors a total of 1168 genes (see NCBI, 2004) (1).  The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that the Y chromosome—which is much smaller—contains “only” 50 million base pairs, and is estimated to contain a mere 251 genes.  Educational institutions such as Baylor University, the Max Planck Institute, the Sanger Institute, Washington University in St. Louis, and others have spent countless hours and millions of research dollars analyzing these unique chromosomes.  As the data began to pour in, they allowed scientists to construct gene maps—using actual sequences from the Human Genome Project (2).  And yet, neither the map for the X nor the Y chromosome contains any “gay gene.” Christian View Point (3) on homosexuality sometimes differs between denominations, but they are more commonly seen between liberal and conservative branches of each denomination. As with many Christian debates on ethical issues, the discussion hinges on how the Bible ought to be interpreted, taking into account the historical context and the meaning of specific words. Homosexuality is the act of intercourse between people of the same sex. When the Bible speaks of homosexuality, its emphasis is on behavior, not condition. God loves sinners, but condemns sin. And the Bible's verdict on homosexual behavior, as with all sexual immorality, is that it is sinful. In the Bible (4) “Leviticus 20:13” states: "If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense." Pope Francis waded diplomatically into the gay marriage debate Friday, June 14, 2013, telling the Archbishop of Canterbury he wants to work together to promote family values "based on marriage." Significantly, though, Francis didn't specify that marriage should be based on a union between a man and woman, which is how Benedict XVI and John Paul II routinely defined it in a way that made clear their opposition to same-sex marriage. The issue of homosexual behavior has had a lot of publicity of late. Homosexual’s Viewpoint (5) say that the slaves have been freed and women have been liberated, so gay rights are long overdue. Society does seem to be moving in that direction. Many homosexuals are “coming out” and openly declaring their homosexuality. In many parts of the western world, homosexual couples receive the same recognition as heterosexual couples with regard to social security benefits. Some church leaders are giving their blessing to homosexual relationships, homosexual church members and even homosexual ministers. Many homosexuals' claim that…

2. Homosexuality is of no harm to the participants or to anyone else. 3. If it feels right to those involved, it is nobody else's business. 4. Homosexual relationships and heterosexual relationships are equally valid. (Some even claim that the Bible condones homosexual relationships.) One of the biggest misconceptions amongst Scientist, Christians and Homosexuals is about the gay lifestyle is the idea that gay people carry diseases such as AIDS. Simply being gay does not make someone ill, just as being smart does not automatically make someone successful. The gay male population does have a higher incidence of sexually transmitted diseases due to poor choices, not because the men are gay. Another homosexual misconception is that having an interest in the same gender makes you gay. Many people are bisexual, meaning they are sexually attracted to both genders. Being interested in same-sex relations is just a variation in the wide spectrum of sexual choices. There is an argument in society as to whether being gay is a nature vs. nurture choice. People who believe in the nature theory think that people are born gay and nothing in the outside environment has an influence on the way they choose to live. Those who believe in the nurture concept of homosexuality think that people can choose to be (and also, choose to not be) gay. However, there is no concrete scientific evidence that being gay is either an inherent genetic disposition or a learned lifestyle.
