Is Bilbo A Hero
The first reason Bilbo is a hero is because he knows when to let something go and when to spare a life. Bilbo is very naive in the fact that he knows what is right from wrong in his heart and doesn’t let the other things happening around him affect it. “And he was miserable, alone, lost. A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo’s heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold fish, sneaking and whispering” (Tolkien 80). Bilbo could not bring himself to kill Gollum because he understood that he was a creature that got lost in the greed of the ring. He couldn’t change how he was now and was completely alone, with the exception of the ring which he loved beyond the price

A hero is someone or something who helps others with an honorable purpose, or a person who possesses traits that others could see as the traits of a role model. In my mind, Frodo Baggins holds these heroic characteristics and, in the end, made choices to assist the well-being of his companions. Frodo’s efforts display that he is concerned for the future of all living things and does not act simply based on his own wants. For instance, when Gandalf questions Frodo of the Ring’s prospect, Frodo chooses to eliminate it. Though he would be destroyed, as well as others, it proves later that he did not do it to benefit only himself. Furthermore, in a meeting discussing the Ring’s future, Frodo volunteers to bring it to the evil land of Mordor. Any…

In the beginning Bilbo is timid, comfortable, and complacent in his secure little hole at Bag End. When Gandalf talks him into embarking on the quest with Thorin’s dwarves, Bilbo becomes so frightened that he faints. As the novel continues Bilbo triumphs over dangers and adversaries, realizing he had courage and strength within him the whole time. Bilbo overcomes many challenges like Confronting the trolls, escaping with Gollum’s ring, slaying the spider, rescuing the dwarves in Mirkwood, and speaking face-to-face with the great dragon Smaug, all of this is proving he is a true hero. Tolkien but not without the help, support, and respect of others. As shown in the Hobbit, bilbo encounters many tough challenges, but it doesn’t stop from trying to get to the final goal; getting the treasure and restoring leadership of the Lonely mountain back to Thorin. The confidence and support are necessary for Bilbo to keep going and continue the journey and not give up and head back to be cozy in his Hobbit Hole. Throughout this entire journey, Bilbo becomes more and more courageous and even went so far as to meet with leaders of an opposing army and say “This is the Arkenstone of Thrain… I give it to you. It will aid you in your bargaining. ”(271) This is showing that despite him possibly risking capture or death, he still has enough courage to help end a needless war between his group’s army and the elven-human’s army.…

The instance with the trolls may have frightened Bilbo, but when faced with Gollum, he used previous experience to be brave and think his way out of a dangerous situation. People today are no different than Bilbo in their behavior. Since many people are not comfortable facing new adventures and potential risks, they are shy away from the challenges that come along with it. Most people would rather back out of a risk they begin to take if they are initially afraid because they aren’t familiar with the new lifestyle they encounter. This directly relates to the first point because the fear of risks and challenges influence one’s comfort zone. Bilbo however, continues on, determined in his journey and learns bravery and confidence through it. Bilbo refused to back out right away like some would in this day in age. People today must keep pushing forward with the choices they make and risks taken, because without them, nothing is…
