Irony In The Pardoner's Tale
Frame Story Essay Both “The pardoner’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer and “Federigo’s Falcon” by Giovanni Boccaccio are similar in some ways and differ in others, irony is used in both stories to help readers understand their message, but the messages that are portrayed to the audience differ. “The Pardoner’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer and “Federigo’s Falcon” by Giovanni Boccaccio portray how greed can be the start of something evil, and how sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the people that are most loved. Therefore “Federigo’s Falcon” and “The pardoner’s tale” are similar because both authors portray their message with irony. The three men vowed to “Be brother’s in this affair” and to defend each other “and we will kill the traitor death I say ” (Chaucer 116-117). Irony is used because even though they went and vowed to kill death at the end they all died instead. When Monna came to Federigo’s house “He decided… [the falcon] would make a worthy dish for such a lady as this” ( Boccaccio 163). Federigo giving up …show more content…
After the third men went to get some food the other two planned that “as you attack, I’ll up and put my dagger through his back” and the guy that went for food also thought that “[He] might have all that treasure to [himself] alone” (Chaucer 249- 263). Even though the three men had made a pact to become brothers and not let the other down, at the end, they all betrayed each other because of their greed. Federigo “With the object of winning [Monna’s] love… lost his entire fortune” (Boccaccio 160-161). Instead of being greedy like the three men Federigo gave everything he had to win Monna’s love even though she did not care for Federigo. Federigo won Monna’s love over at the end because of his generosity towards her and his

In Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Pardoner’s Tale,” the Pardoner serves as a moral exemplum in that his drunken and greedy habits highlight an opposite path of righteousness. The Pardoner embraces his love of wealth and alcohol however, and emerges as an exemplum of transparency in addition to sin. The Pardoner is in fact a skilled preacher who uses language to persuasively advertise his false relics. He specifically personifies medieval rhetoric, or the use of poetic tropes such as metaphor and exemplum to elevate speech and sway his audience. This elevation occurs at the expense of transparency however, as the Pardoner’s decorative rhetoric veils his speech with layers of symbolism and subjective interpretation. The Pardoner’s language therefore…

Geoffery Chaucer wrote twenty-four tales but the most noticeable of these twenty-four tales are "The Pardoners Tale" and "The Wife Of Baths Tale". The Wife of Bath's Tale" is the more likely candidate to win against "The Pardoner's Tale" in the morality side. The reason her tale has morality is the goodness of the poor and broken. Once her story is near its end and the knight, her protagonist, is face to face with the old woman, the antagonist, the wife's message becomes clear. The very first of her ideas is that gentleness, the most prized quality by the upper class, does not come from the class that someone is born into but rather their choices. In "The Pardoner's Tale" the pardoner sells the church's pardons to people who have sinned and seek absolution. He also preaches against sins, mostly avarice. Ironically, in the prologue to his tale, he admits being guilty of that sin and is quite proud of it. His tale is also about greed; in it, death takes three greedy men to their early graves.…

An example of a similarity is when O’Flaherty explained how the assassin felt remorse as soon as he realized his foe was dead. “He became bitten by remorse. The sweat stood out on his forehead… he revolted from the sight of the shattered mass of his dead enemy... he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote is explaining how as soon as the joy and relief faded, the sniper was soon filled with regret and shame. In the poem, Hardy described the similar reaction the main character had after he shot his enemy. “I shot him dead because/ because he was my foe... he thought he’d ‘list, perhaps,/ off-hand-like-just as I/ was out of work--had sold his traps/ No other reason why”(Hardy 9-10, 13-16). This quote is stating that as he was thinking about the death of his enemy, he realized they were not very different from each other. Even though the passages have some similarities by using irony, the story still have differences. For instance, when O’Flaherty revealed to us the surprising twist that the sniper killed his brother by using situational irony. “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”(O’Flaherty 208). This quote shows how as the sniper turned over the dead body expecting the enemy to be a stranger. The sniper soon discovered that his enemy was his own brother. On…

In Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer presents a collection of tales which satirize religion, addictions, and other human vices. The Pardoner from “The Pardoner’s Tale” preaches against various sins such as lechery, gluttony, falsehood, and gambling. In the midst of his preaching, the pardoner explains his deceptive nature and admits that he is a fraudulent preacher. After admitting this, he proceeds to ask these people to buy his counterfeit relics even after telling them he is a scoundrel. It is ironic that the pardoner would do such a thing; but the reason for this action lies in his need for a confession. The reason that the pardoner admits himself to be a fraud is because he feels a need to confess his shortcomings in order to gain social legitimacy.…

John Collier’s “The Chaser” is based on the situational irony of a young man with unreal hope. John Collier creates the short story almost entirely in dialogue between a young man, Alan Austen, who is head over heels in love and wants to possess his crush to be completely devoted to him, and an old man who believes in a life with zero romantic involvement. The situation reflects hidden discontentment that the story may in fact be called cynical. This is made plain by the situation, the unnamed old man, and the use of double meaning of a certain potion. In the story the situation between Austin and old man display a sense of pure cynicism.…

Another main similarity between the two stories was Hamlet Sr. and Mufasa. Hamlet Sr. was once the King of Denmark. He would rule his kingdom with peace and prosperity. Similar to this is Mufasa. He was the king of the Pride Lands; he ruled peacefully and only worried about his son and his responsibilities. Another similarity between Mufasa and Hamlet Sr. is how they both became leaders for their sons after their death. They lead them to get revenge on their uncle and clean up after his mess. They both came to their sons in a type of spirit and is what drove both the sons into action. Also in the message that the fathers told their sons, they let their sons interpret it themselves and didn’t give them exact rules or duties to accomplish.…

The Canterbury Tales is one of the greatest analogy of stories in English language, for its satirical language that had great impact in British society. One of the tales, the pardoner's tale, which comes after the Physician's Tale and before the Shipman's Tale, is one of the best piece of literature demonstrating the use of satire.
