Iphones Case Study
Iphones, Ipad, Ihome, Islave four words and two separate worlds. As the need for more and more advanced apple products the harder the slaves at Apple have to work. In workers, I mean in the factories that are inhumane to extreme measures. In the last eleven years the unit sales of Iphones have gone up dramatically. In 2007, 1.39 million Iphones were sold. In 2017, 216 million units were sold. The demand of Iphones went up and the workers have to pay with their lives. Some workers even think that taking their own lives is the only way that they can escape these miserable work conditions . “Last year a startling 18 Chinese migrant workers attempted suicide at Foxconn production facilities located in Guangdong, Jiangsu and Hebei Provinces. Fourteen …show more content…
If they cannot reach the production target, they have to skip dinner or work on unpaid overtime shifts. Even worse, they are threatened by potential harm from occupational managers in various departments. Additionally, military-style management practices are still inplace, characterized by “military training” for new workers(SACOM)” Many workers endure miscalculation and withholding wages, forced and unpaid overtime, exposure to irritating chemicals, harsh management, and an uncaring care hotline. Workers are forced to live in work in environments where getting basic needs for survival are shut off or restricted. Hair dryers and washing clothing is against policy. The workers make so little that it is often a challenge for them to get nourishment from the canteen during the day while they are working endlessly until the requirement of products are met. “We have to pay CNY 150 for dormitory and about CNY 200-300 for food. After these deductions, our basic salary is only CNY 950,” said a female worker who had joined Foxconn 2 months prior(SACOM)uracy with beginning and end times. If a production target isn’t reached workers will be kept overtime, often unpaid until the work is done. Supervisors yell and use insulting language in order to make workers become more like a production line. If a worker isn’t efficient enough they will receive criticism in front of everyone else in the assembly …show more content…
Many students confess that they were forced to do these internships due to fear of being punished by their schools. Many workers are scammed into working for Foxconn with hope of a high salary and prestige. “The labour department made false promises to us about the salary at Foxconn. It claimed we could earn over CNY 2500 per month.” Zhang only knew about the real basic wage when he signed the contract(SACOM)” The big CEO’s pry on the dreams of the workers that they suck into their slave circle. While reading Goodbye iSlave: A Manifesto for Digital Abolition
Jack Qui took me more in depth with his personal witnessing the misery and evil first hand. A quote that really stuck out to me was said by a protester. “You think that the authorities and the tycoon's respect you?You think they listen to you? No, they see you as slaves!” Qui then compared the slavery in China to Twelve Years A

If a company is able to attain and sustain that level of manpower at low cost as possible, the company will have bigger margin, from cost of producing to a perceived value of the product. A country like China can leverage on the cost of labor that their country can offer. It greatly affects the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product). It would be a great benefit for China to continue to offer cheap labor to keep the world bringing in business to their country of 1.3 billion in population but Chinese people are getting more aware of contract law. Companies are getting high labor turnover. According to New York Times, June 2010, that labor dispute is becoming part of China’s economic landscape. And that of 210 factories that were studied by labor advocate, 90 per cent of those factories cheat on overtime.…

On January 25 the New York Times published an article entitled: Losing Ground- China's Leaders Manage Class Conflict Carefully. The article begins by comparing the Chinese commercial hub of Guangdong to the 19th century English commercial hub of Manchester, whose poor working conditions and division of labor and capital worked as a prime example for Marx's critique of capitalism. Much like Manchester, Guangdong's (and China's) industrial growth depends on cheap labor that attracts capital, in this case from multinational corporations who want to maximize profits. Demand for cheap labor in Guangdong has caused the population to increase by 10% over the past decade. On average these new workers make $50 to $70 dollars a month. This average wage has not changed since 1993 unless you consider the fact that these wages buy less today than they did ten years ago. Although China has attracted large amounts of foreign investment, become the largest exporter to the U.S. in Asia and developed a middle class, the benefits of this growth have not helped improve the lives of the 800 million Chinese who are farmers and factory or construction workers. This has caused political groups in China to criticize the economic policies of the government, one stating that the Chinese have "colonized their own citizens". Life has become so bad that some Communist Party officials feel that social unrest is inevitable, perhaps even another revolution. In response the Chinese government has said they would increase workers wages and stop their abuse of workers but many believe that nothing will be done. Considering the path that China has followed over the past decade it seems as if this reform is unlikely. With their minds only on growth the government sees workers rights and environmental protection as "threats to investment". Adding to the problem, workers are often not paid for work done for the state, instead the money is just pocketed by management, work sites do not have the proper…

Foxconn has dorms where 70,000 of their workers lived, at times stuffed 20 people to a three-room apartment (Duhigg & Barboza, 2012). These people work extreme overtime, are paid very little, and with the lack of privacy with those living conditions, they are just trying to exist. After a long shift, these workers come to rest in a place that is overcrowded, just to go back to work and do it all over again. Work is alienating because it serves solely to provide the means for maintaining physical existence (Appelrouth & Edles, 2016). That is exactly what these workers at Foxconn are doing; they are not living, they are trying to survive. These workers are not going out to enjoy a few drinks with some friends or catching the newest movie. They are simply working to just to live another…

Economic imbalance may be one of the most important causes engendering the exploitation. To some extent, the wage gap has enhanced the exploitation of labours, both regionally and nationally. The most attractive aspect of working in the developed regions is that the wages are much more higher than those in rural areas. Therefore, the workers may earn more, but also be exploited. To take Foxconn as an example, the workers have to do extra work for overtime fees to earn more. According to Ngai and Chan (2012), the basic monthly wage of the workers in Foxconn factories was about 950 RMB (or US$147) to 1200 RMB (or US$186), with 40 hours normal work, but the workers can get about 1600 RMB to 2000 RMB per month by working overtime, sometimes up to 120 hours per month. Although the basic salaries are already higher than those in the rural areas, they are still not enough for living in the cities and supporting their families out of poverty at the same time.…

In fact, many workers in Foxconn needed to work more than 60 hours a week, which exceed the Apple’s limitation in the supplier code of conduct, but also in breach of China’s labour law. It is min-culpable that Foxccon is not honest, but in fact this labour law (maximum 49-hours a week) is widely-ignored in China.…
