‘Explain the boundaries between the teaching role and other professional roles’
‘Professionalism requires us to maintain appropriate standards and fulfil our responsibilities to learners, institutions and colleagues (Francis & Gould 2009:10)
As a teacher, I need to know what my teaching role involves and not overstep my responsibilities – I need to know my own boundaries first. A good example of this would be contacting a student if they have been absent via telephone or email. Contacting them several times would be inappropriate, and joining their social networking group would be unprofessional.
Likewise, giving extra support or attention to one student and not others needs to be avoided – teachers need to remain in control, be fair and ethical at all times, and avoid any favouritism.
Other roles normally exist within an organisation to help students who, as cited above, maybe absent for an extended period of time, and it is up to them to check on the students’ welfare, otherwise one could be seen as ‘overstepping your boundaries’.
