Invisible Knapsack

White privilege is refers to the advantages inherent in being categorized as White. White privilege is usually not something a White person can notice but more of feature that come with being in the White race. It is not a privilege that exists but it is set in motion by people and is enacted upon. As Golash- Boza points out, A privilege enjoyed by White Americans would be not being followed around in a store because they are statistically less likely to shoplift. Also a privilege pointed out that Golash- Boza explains is the fact that when you are White, people you see on the street are more likely to smile at you instead of clinching their purses. Peggy Levitt explained a theory called the “invisible Knapsack”. Levitt explains that the “Invisible Knapsack is an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashing in on each day, but about which I was ‘meant’ to remain obvious” (151). An example she uses is “having the ability to swear, or dress in secondhand clothing, without having people attribute thee choices to the bad morals, the poverty or the illiteracy of my race” (151). According to Golash- Boza, I am already apart of being privileged by white privilege without even knowing it. I can come up with the example of Justin Bieber. He would always dress in baggy clothes, with gold chains, a clothing type usually worn by Black people. Instead of Justin Bieber being called a thug, he was simply left alone. If a Black person wears such clothing, they are called a thug. As a White person, we have the privilege of wearing the type of clothes we would like to wear without our character or financial ways and means being judged or questioned. Justin Bieber was a prime example of being affected by White privilege. He is also a celebrity so his finances are certainly not an indicter that he is on the lower level of the social and financial
